David Buttolph

James David Buttolph Jr. (ur. 3 sierpnia 1902r - zm. 1 stycznia 1983r) był amerykańskim kompozytorem filmowym, który w swojej karierze napisał muzykę do ponad 300 filmów. Urodzony w Nowym Jorku Buttolph już w młodym wieku wykazywał talent muzyczny i ostatecznie formalnie studiował muzykę. Po uzyskaniu dyplomu muzycznego Buttolph przeniósł się do Europy w 1923 roku  i studiował w Austrii i Niemczech, utrzymując się jako pianista w nocnych klubach.

  Do Stanów Zjednoczonych wrócił w 1927 roku, a kilka lat później rozpoczął pracę w radiu NBC jako aranżer i dyrygent. W 1933 Buttolph przeniósł się do Los Angeles i rozpoczął pracę w filmach. Zdaniem wielu najlepszym dziełem Buttolpha była praca jako aranżer nad partyturą Alfreda Newmana do „Znaku Zorro” (1940).  

W połowie lat pięćdziesiątych Buttolph zaczął komponować muzykę dla telewizji, a najbardziej zapadającym w pamięć motywem przewodnim był telewizyjny western Maverick z Jamesem Garnerem w roli głównej, a ta sama muzyka pojawiła się w jego ścieżce dźwiękowej do filmu Samotny strażnik (1956). Nadal komponował muzykę dla telewizji, z których wiele to westerny, aż do przejścia na emeryturę w 1963 roku.
