Thelma Records

Wytwórnia Thelma została założona przez rodziców żony Berry Gordy'ego Roberta i Hazel
Coleman,którzy wcześniej pracowali w Daco i Kable Records.Jej nazwa to imię ich córki.Daco była wytwórnią którą Colemanowie założyli razem z Donem Davisem na rogu Alexandrine w Detroit.Jej atrakcją były lokalny talent - grupa The Fabulous Playboys z liderem Sonny Monroe.
 

W sierpniu 1962r Colemanowie otworzyli Thelma Records przy 8040 Dexter Boulevard.Pierwsza płyta Answer Me that was sung - Richarda Streeta & The Distants była dziełem nastoletniego wówczas Normana Whitfielda,który był jej producentem i kompozytorem.Tu właśnie był początek tego niezwykle płodnego kompozytora i producenta.Opiekował się on jako producent grupą Sonnettes z która nagrał dwa single dla KO Records.
 

Jedną ze znaczących postaci wytwórni była legenda Northern Soulu lat 60-tych w Detroit-Emanuel Laskey,który podpisał kontrakt z wytwórnią w 1962r.W tym czasie przeniesiono biura wytwórni na Grand River.Wydany we wrześniu 1963r singiel Lasky'ego "Welfare Cheese" był pierwszym sukcesem Thelma Records,który w tekście piosenki odwoływał się do ówczesnego prezydenta Johna 

Kennedy'ego.Lasky był atrakcją nocnych klubów Detroit i turnee pod szyldem Ypsilanti razem ze znanymi w środowisku Detroit artystkami-Theresą Lindsey i Betty Lavett.Turnee wspierali też inni artyści Thelma Records-Rose Battiste i Tommy Stone [Storm],członkini Fabulous Pips,która obok własnych nagrań wspierała wokalnie wielu wykonawców nagrywających dla Thelma.
 

Grupa Robert Ward and The Ohio Untouchables nagrała dwa single dla wytworni,promując je na turnee po Karolinie i Tennessee,obwołując się jako "Nat King Cole soulu w Detroit".
