Capricorn Records

 Założyciel Capricorn Records,Phil Walden zaczynał jako menadżer artystów rhytm'n'bluesowych - Otisa Reddinga, Sam and Dave, Percy Sledge'a i Clarence Cartera.

 

W 1967r nawiązał kontakt z wiceprezydentem Atlantic,Jerry Wexlerem ,którego zapoznał go ze swoją ideą budowy studio nagraniowego w swoim rodzinnym mieście ,Macon.Wexler zasugerował raczej założenie wytwórni płytowej finansowanej przez Atlantic.Tak też się stało,a pierwszym artystą nagrywającym dla niej był mało znany wówczas gitarzysta sesyjny pracujący w Muscle Shoals Studios,Duanne Allman.Walden podpisał także kontrakt z Johnny Jenkinsem z którym współpracował kilka lat wcześniej.
 

Greg Allmann wcześniej występujący w Glass Hour a razem z bratem Greggiem założyli Allman Brothers Band,który był autorem jednej z najlepiej sprzedających się płyt "live" w historii rocka-The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East.Po zmianie dystrybutora z Atlantic na Warner,w połowie lat 70-tych dla Capricorn nagrywali Elvin Bishop (ex Paul Butterfield Blues Band), Bonnie Bramlett, Alex Taylor, Marshall Tucker Band, Cowboy, i Wet Willie.
 

W 1977r wytwórnia przeżywając finansowe trudności,zmienia dystrybutora na Polygram.Nie przyniosło to spodziewanych rezultatów,mimo nowych kontraktów z Sea Level [założyli go ex członkowie Allman Brothers Band] i Black Oak Arkansas.W 1980r Capricorn zbankrutowała,a Waldena trapiły kłopoty osobiste.Powraca w 1987r próbując nakłonić wielkie wytwórnie do reaktywowania Capricorn.

Doprowadza do współpracy z szefem Warner Records,który pomaga w planowanym przedsięwzięciu-reinkarnacji Capricorn,ale w nowej siedzibie w Nashville.Pierwszym wydawnictwem "nowej" wytwórni była płyta zespołu-Widespread Panic.W 1996r centrala wytwórni przenosi się do Atlanty,a Walden sprzedaje połowę aktywów dla Polygram/Mercury.
