Początkowo występowali pod często zmieniającymi się nazwami, w tym The Creators, The Romeos, Senor Soul i Nightshift. W 1969 r. grupą zainteresował się przebywający wówczas w Kalifornii eks-wokalista The Animals Eric Burden, proponując zespołowi stałe wspólne występy. Grupa przyjęła ostateczną nazwę, a skład uzupełnili Lee Oskar (właśc. Oskar Levetin Hansen, ur. 24.03.1948 r. w Kopenhadze. Dania; harmonijka ustna) i "Papa" Dee Alien (właśc. Thomas Sylvester Alien, ur. 18.07.1931 r.
w Wilmington w stanie Delaware, zm. 30.08.1988 r.; instr. perkusyjne).
Z pierwszego nagranego wspólnie albumu Eric Burdon Declares War, pochodził m.in. singlowy, oparty na rytmicznej melorecytacji przebój "Spili The Wine". Jednak wkrótce po nagraniu drugiego longplaya The Black Man's Burdon, zespół pozbył się brytyjskiego lidera . Na płytach All Day Music i The World Is A Ghetto dominowała fuzja funka, rhythmn'bluesa, rocka i rytmów latynoamerykańskich. Single ,"The Cisco Kid" (z 1973 r.), "Why Can't We Be Friends?" (z 1975 r.) i "Summer" (z 1976 r.) doczekały się w USA "złotych płyt", zaś do brytyjskiej Top 20 trafiły tematy "Low Rider" (z 1976 r.) i "Galaxy" (z 1978 r.).
W późniejszym okresie losy zespołu potoczyły się mniej pomyślnie. Niefortunny kontrakt z wytwórnią MCA spowodował spadek sprzedaży płyt. Oscar porzucił grupę, wybierając działalność solową, a kolejne zmiany składu pozbawiły War charakterystycznej dynamiki i klarowności. Popularność wydanych w 1982 r. singli "You Got The Power" i "Outlaw" zapowiadała renesans powodzenia, jednak z czasem zespół zmuszony był realizować nagrania własnym sumptem. W 1987 r. remake przebojowego niegdyś tematu "Low Rider" trafił w dolne rejony amerykańskich list rhythm'n'bluesowych.
