Soul Records

Soul Records została założona na początku 1964 roku przez Berry'ego Gordy'ego Jr jako miejsce na ostrzejszą, a nawet jazzową muzykę R&B, która zaczęła przyciągać epitetem „soul music” i nadała jej doskonale oczywistą nazwę,z  którą nikt inny najwyraźniej nie kłopotał się prawem autorskim. Wytwórnia Soul nigdy nie była uważany za jedną z najbardziej prestiżowych symboli Motown (jak „wielka trójka” Tamla , Motown i Gordy ), ale w rzeczywistości wytwórnia wydała jedne z najlepszych materiałów w katalogu Motown i była w każdym razie równa „Wielkiej trójce”, może z wyjątkiem profilu i siły marketingowej.

Wraz z upadkiem Workshop Jazz , stajnia Motown nie miała odpowiedniego sposobu by wydać płyty z limitowanym popem; Soul zapewniła doskonałą okazję, a jednocześnie zgromadziła listę znakomitych artystów, którzy mogliby odnieść sukces w którejkolwiek wytwórni z „wielkiej trójki”.
