Candi Staton

Candi Staton Ur. w Hanceville w stanie Alabama. Debiutowała w murzyńskim zespole wokalnym The Gospel Trio, z którego odeszła po rozstaniu z pierwszym mężem, by specjalizować się w świeckim repertuarze.

Jej odkrywcą i pierwszym promotorem był wokalista soulowy Clarence Carter (znany m.in z przeboju "Patches" z 1970 r.), dzięki któremu podpisała kontrakt z wytwórnią Fame. Carter był też autorem singlowego debiutu Staton, "I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart (Than A Young Man's Fool)". Sukces soulowej wersji tematu Tammy Wynette "Stand By Your Man", spowodował zainteresowanie się piosenkarki muzyką country. Małżeński związek z Carterem zakończył się kolejnym rozwodem.

W 1974 r. Staton przeszła z Fame pod skrzydła Warner Brothers. Nagrany w 1976 r. ciekawy popowy temat "Young Hearts Run Free" zapoczątkował nowy etap w karierze wokalistki. Wspólna kompozycja braci Barry'ego, Maurice'a i Robina Gibbów, "Nights On Broadway", trafiła do brytyjskiej Top 10, jednak w USA przeszła bez echa. Również późniejszym nagraniom Staton wiodło się lepiej w Anglii niż za oceanem, gdzie trafiały jedynie na listy rhythm'n'bluesowe. W 1991 r. dyskotekową popularność zdobył wykonywany wraz z The Force szlagier "You Lost The Love". W późniejszych latach piosenkarka powróciła do swoich gospelowych korzeni.
