Isley Brothers

W historii muzyki popularnej nie było zespołu o karierze dłuższej od The Isley Brothers. Rodzinna grupa, która w okrojonym składzie funkcjonuje po dziś dzień, była jednym z czołowych przedstawicieli nowoczesnego soulu i wczesnego funku. Jako zbiór znakomitych muzyków, „bracia Isley” wielokrotnie pojawiali się na scenie obok innych wielkich wykonawców takich, jak Jimi Hendrix czy Elton John. Na przestrzeni wielu lat zespół nie jeden raz reformował swój styl, jednocześnie wpływając na rozwój czarnej muzyki. The Isley Brothers znacząco zasłużyli się dla rozwoju rozpoczętego przez   Smokeya Robinsona nurtu quiet storm, r&b końca lat 90-tych, a nawet subtelniejszego hip-hop soulu. Wielu artystów wymienia The Isley Brothers jako główną inspirację. Niemałą zasługę ma w tym fenomenalny, satynowy falset Ronalda Isleya, który pomimo upływu lat cały czas trafia w każdy dźwięk.

Bracia Isley zetknęli się z muzyką już we wczesnej młodości. Do śpiewu zachęcał ich ojciec, który sam był zawodowym wokalistą. Matka grała na pianinie w kościele i bardzo często zabierała swoich synów na msze, podczas których nasiąkali oni tradycyjną muzyką gospel. W 1954 czwórka najstarszych braci Isley założyła wokalny kwartet, w którego repertuarze znalazło się głównie gospel. Zespół stał się znany w Ohio, gdzie z powodzeniem grał koncerty. Rozwijającą się karierą braci wstrząsnęła tragiczna śmierć Vernona w 1955 r. Zespół pozostał w formie trio, a Ronald objął obowiązki głównego wokalisty. W 1957 r., za przyzwoleniem rodziców trzej bracia pojechali do Nowego Jorku z planem szerszego zaistnienia na rynku muzycznym. Żeby to osiągnąć postanowili odejść od stylistyki gospel na rzecz doo-wop.

Pierwsze „nowojorskie” single The Isley Brothers nie spotkały się ze zbyt ciepłym przyjęciem publiczności. Przez dwa lata zespół grał koncerty w niewielkich salach, przed mało znaczącymi wykonawcami. Los odmienił się, kiedy przyszło im otwierać koncert Jackiego Wilsona. Wśród widowni był pracownik wytwórni rca records, na którym ogromne wrażenie zrobiła ich interpretacja „Lonely Teardrops” Wilsona, w której słychać było echa gospel. Wystarczyło to, żeby The Isley Brothers podpisali swój pierwszy fonograficzny kontrakt.

Premierowy singiel, zatytułowany „Shout”, nie był wielkim przebojem, ale trafił na listę billboard hot loo. Piosenka mieszała w sobie elementy rock'n'rolla i charakterystycznych gospelowych wokali. Kolejne nagrania w barwach rca records nie odniosły sukcesu i zespół w 1962 r. zdecydował się przejść do wytwórni specter/ WAND RECORDS.

W barwach nowego wydawnictwa The Isley Brothers wypuścili przeróbkę „Twist and Shout” The Top- notes, która trafiła na 17. pozycję listy billboard hot 1oo. W ten sposób zespół dał się poznać szerokiej publiczności, wychodząc poza ograniczony krąg miłośników r&b. Oryginalne nagrania braci nie sprzedawały się jednak tak dobrze. W 1964 r. założyli oni własną wytwórnię T neck records i wydali dwa single „Testify” i „Move Over & Let Me Dance”. Główną partię gitary zagrał w nich początkujący wtedy gitarzysta Jimmy James, który jednocześnie stał się członkiem koncertowego bandu braci Isley, a potem zdobył sławę jako Jimi Hendrix. Żadne z tych wydawnictw nie odniosło sukcesu na listach przebojów, więc The Isley Brothers postanowili ponownie wesprzeć się machiną promocyjną dużej wytwórni.

W 1965 r. podpisali kontrakt z należącym do MOtown RECORDS tamla records. Pierwszy singiel w barwach nowego labelu, ballada „This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)” dobrnęła do 12. pozycji na liście billboard hot 1oo i nadała im status gwiazdy. Singiel osiągnął również spory sukces w Wielkiej Brytanii. The Isley Brothers nie potrafili jednak pójść za ciosem i natychmiast powtórzyć tego osiągnięcia, co ugruntowałoby ich gwiazdorską pozycję. Za powolnie rozwijającą się karierę obwiniali Berry ego Gordy’ego, szefa ich wytwórni tamla/ motown records, który rzekomo nie poświęcał im należytej uwagi, inwestując czas i środki na promocję we flagowe  The Temptations.

W efekcie, w 1969 r. zespół rozstał się z tamla records i na nowo powołał do życia niezależne T neck records, podpisując również umowę na promocję i dystrybucję z nowojorskim wydawnictwem buddah records. Do zespołu dołączyli bracia Marvin i Ernie. Pracując na własny rachunek, The Isley Brothers zmienili image i skręcili bardziej w stronę motorycznych funkowych brzmień. Zwiastunem zmiany był singiel „It’s Your Thing”. Piosenka trafiła na drugie miejsce listy pop billboardu, sprzedała się w nakładzie blisko 5 milionów kopii i uhonorowana została statuetką Grammy za Najlepsze wykonanie r&b przez duet lub grupę. Brzmienie zespołu ewoluowało w kierunku surowego funku połączonego z ostrymi rockowymi riffami - przyłożył się do tego Ernie i jego styl gry na gitarze. The Isley Brothers włączyli do swojego repertuaru piosenki Boba Dylana i Stephena Stillsa, przez co jeszcze bardziej przypadli do gustu białej publiczności. W 1972 r. grupa wydała album Brother, Brother, Brother, który spotkał się z bardzo dobrym przyjęciem w muzycznej prasie.

Kontrakt z buddah records wygasł po wydaniu tego krążka - w 1973 r. The Isley Brothers podpisali umowę z epic records. Do składu dołączył Chris Jasper, szwagier braci.
Pierwszym długogrającym wydawnictwem The Isley Brothers w barwach epic records był krążek 3 + 3. Album znakomicie radził sobie na listach przebojów, w dużej mierze dzięki singlowi „That Lady, Pts. 1 & 2”, który trafił do pierwszej dziesiątki listy pop tygodnika billboard. 3 + 3 było eklektyczną płytą, na której mieszały się ostry funk, spokojne ballady w duchu quiet storm i odrobina rocka. Kolejny album The Heat Is On (1975) również odniósł wielki sukces, docierając do szczytu listy najlepiej sprzedających się albumów billboardu. Tym razem bracia postanowili zawrzeć w swoich tekstach społeczny komentarz, mocno widoczny w singlu-manifeście „Fight the Power, Pts. 1 & 2”. Spokojniejsza, lekko jazzująca ballada „For the Love of You, Pts. 1 & 2” ukazała się jako drugi singiel, doskonale trafiając w gusta publiczności r&b.

Dwa lata później zespół powrócił z płytą Go for Your Guns, która rozwinęła stylistykę quiet storm. Na początku lat 80-tych The Isley Brothers zaczęli coraz gorzej radzić sobie na listach przebojów, a w zespole pojawiły się odmienne zdania na temat tego, w jakim kierunku powinna rozwijać się ich muzyka. W1983 r. bracia wydali album Between the Sheets, który wskrzesił ich nieco podupadającą karierę i sprzedał się całkiem nieźle. Wkrótce potem od grupy odeszli Ernie, Marvin i Chris Jesper. W 1985 r. pozostała trójka przeszła do warner Bros. records. Kariera w nowej wytwórni nie nabrała imponującego rozpędu. Album Masterpiece stał się niewielkim przebojem i tylko wśród ograniczonej publiczności r&b. W1986 r. na atak serca zmarł O’Kelly. Rudolph i Ronald postanowili kontynuować karierę jako duet.

W1989 r. wydali album Spend the Night, z którego tytułowa piosenka uplasowała się na szczycie listy r&b billboardu. Chwilę potem bracia postanowili zawiesić działalność, poświęcając się karierom solowym. W1991 r. Ron - używający także pseudonimu Mr. Biggs - reaktywował The Isley Brothers razem z Erniem i Marvinem, wypuszczając album Tracks of Life. W kolejnych latach bracia udzielali się głównie w innych projektach, a ponownie spotkali się razem w studiu nagraniowym, by zarejestrować platynowy album Mission to Please w 1996 r.

Muzyka The Isley Brothers upodobniła się w tym czasie do nagrań młodszych wykonawców, w czym udział jako producenci mieli  R. Kelly,  Keith Sweat i Babyface. Ten pierwszy jest jednym z głównych sprawców ponownego sukcesu braci, którzy z albumem Eternal po raz kolejny odnotowali sukces na listach przebojów w 2001 roku. Oprócz R. Kelly’ego, który wyprodukował i zaśpiewał w przeboju „Contagious”, na płycie pojawili się również Jill Scott, Raphael Saadiq i legendarny producencki duet   Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Płyta w samych Stanach Zjednoczonych sprzedała się w nakładzie ponad dwóch i pół miliona egzemplarzy. Utorowała tym samym drogę albumowi Body Kiss, który w 2003 r. zadebiutował na pierwszym miejscu listy najlepiej sprzedających się płyt tygodnika billboard.

W 2006 r., nakładem wytwórni def soul classics, grupa wydała krążek Baby Makin’ Music, nad którym pracował m.in.  Jermaine Dupri, którego promocję wsparł singiel „Just Came Here to Chill” i trasa koncertowa.
