Gary Lewis & The Playboys

Jedna z najpopularniejszych amerykańskich grup popowych połowy lat sześćdziesiątych. W pierwszym składzie oprócz Gary'ego Lewisa (właśc. Gary Levital, ur. 31.07.1946 r. w Nowym Jorku, USA; śpiew, perkusja) występowali: Alan Ramsey (ur. 27.07.1943 r. w stanie New Jersey; gitara), John West (ur. 31.07.1939 r. w Unrichville w stanie Ohio, USA; gitara), David Costell (ur. 15.03.1944 r. w Pittsburgu w stanie Pensylwania, bass ), David Walker (ur. 12.05.1943 r. w w stanie Alabama, USA; instrumenty klawiszowe).

Lider, syn znanego komika filmowego Lewisa (nie mylić z Jerrym Lee ), grał na perkusji od czternastego roku życia. Zespół debiutował w Hollywood, produkując się podczas imprez towarzyskich. Zatrudniony na stałym kontrakcie w Disneylandzie, podpisał kontrakt z wytwórnią Liberty i podjął współpracę z początkującym wówczas producentem Leonem Russellem.

W lutym  965 r. singlowy debiut grupy, "This Diamond Ring" (kompozycja Ala Koopera napisana pierwotnie dla eks-idola pop music Bobby'ego Vee) trafił na szczyt list amerykańskich, torując tam drogę całej serii przebojów zespołu: "Count Me In", "Save Your Heart For Me", "Everybody Loves A Clown", "She's Just My Style", "She's Gonna Miss Her" i "Green Grass". Wprawdzie autorami ostatniego była brytyjska spółka autorska Cook/ Greenway (występująca równocześnie jako wokalny duet David And Jonathan), jednak temat nie zdobył popularności w Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie w okresie swej największej sławy za oceanem grupa była praktycznie nie znana.

W wielu innych krajach płyty Playboys rozchodziły się jednak w rekordowych nakładach, a ich sukcesom towarzyszyły regularne występy telewizyjne oraz role w niskobudżetowych filmach "A Swingin' Summer" i "0ut Of Sight". Spadek popularności grupy w 1967 r. wynikł nie tyle ze zmiany upodobań słuchaczy, co z powołania lidera do służby wojskowej. Zwolniony w 1968 r., Lewis próbował wraz z The Playboys powrócić na listy przebojów nowymi wersjami "Sealed With A Kiss" Briana Hylanda i "Rhythm Of The Rain" zespołu The Cascades.

Już sam dobór materiału świadczył o twórczej stagnacji grupy zmierzającej nieuchronnie do rezerwatu rytmów lat sześćdziesiątych. Lewis próbował szczęścia jako solista i kompozytor, by z czasem ograniczyć się do występów w kabaretach i na okolicznościowych festiwalach.
