Kilka miesięcy później wraz z perkusistą Terrym Smartem i gitarzystą Kenem Paynem założył zespół The Drifters, który grywał w klubach na terenie hrabstwa Hertford, zanim zakotwiczył się na stałe w słynnej kawiarni 2Is przy londyńskiej Old Compton Street. W składzie pojawił się wtedy nowy muzyk - gitarzysta Ian Samwell.
Rok 1958 był dla zespołu przełomowy. Podczas przeglądu młodych talentów
zorganizowanego w kinie Gaumont w Sheperd's Bush agent teatralny George
Ganyou zwrócił uwagę na duże możliwości wokalne i korzystną aparycję
Cliffa i postanowił sfinansować nagranie taśmy demo z utworami " Breathless" i "Lawdy Miss Clawdy". Jeden z egzemplarzy dotarł do producenta EMI Norrie Paramora,
który zgodził się na zorganizowanie grupie przesłuchania. Początkowo
nalegał, by Richard nagrał materiał jako solista z towarzyszeniem
orkiestry, ale wokalista zdołał przekonać go, by skład pozostał nie
zmieniony. Kwartet zarejestrował z udziałem kilku muzyków
sesyjnych balladę "Schoolboy Crush" z zamiarem wydania jej na
pierwszej stronie singla. Materiał zwrócił uwagę wpływowego producenta
telewizyjnego Jacka Gooda. Jednak bardziej niż młodzieżowy hit "Schoolboy Crush" spodobał mu się utwór ze strony B singla "Move It",
kompozycja gitarzysty The Drifters Iana Samwella. Good zareagował na
Naturalnie brzmiący wokal i
chwytliwy riff wydawały się autentycznie amerykańskie i wyraźnie różniły
się od pretensjonalnych produktów brytyjskich studiów nagraniowych.
Dzięki nieustannie prowadzonej przez Gooda promocji, m.in.
W tym czasie artysta zadebiutował w telewizyjnym show Gooda " Oh Boy!" i
Drugoplanowa rola
oferowana The Drifters skłoniła Samwella do odejścia z zespołu i
poświęcenia się karierze zawodowego twórcy piosenek. Pod koniec 1958 r.
nowymi członkami grupy zostali Hank B. Marvin i Bruce Welch. Wkrótce jej nazwę zmieniono na The Shadows
The Drifters. Richard utrwalił swoją pozycję w rock'n'rollowym
panteonie, gorsząc krytykę zachowaniem w stylu Elvisa Presleya. "New
Jednak Cliff Richard w
porę zmienił image, dojrzał muzycznie i zrezygnował z presleyowskiego
stylu. Kompozycja Lionela Barta "Living Doll" stała się hitem numer l w Wielkiej Brytanii. Trzy miesiące później artysta powrócił na top smutną piosenką "Travellin' Light".
W przeciągu 12 miesięcy wziął też udział w dwóch filmach. Pierwszy z nich, dramat "Serious Charge",
był obłożony zakazem emisji w niektórych rejonach kraju z powodu
poruszania kontrowersyjnego tematu, jakim był szantaż homoseksualny. W
drugim, "Expresso Bongo" w reżyserii Wolta Mankowitza, Richard
wcielił się w rolę Bongo Herberta. Film w znakomity sposób, z dużą dozą
humoru pokazywał mechanizmy działania i bezwzględne prawa muzycznego
do masowego odbiorcy, którą reprezentowały takie hity, jak: "Please Don't Tease", "Nine Times Out Of Ten", "Theme For A Dream" i wielki przebój z 1962 r. "The Young Ones",
Jednak w przeciwieństwie do Króla
Rock'n'Rolla, Richard poza grą w filmach, regularnie koncertował,
występował w telewizji, a nawet brał udział w przedstawieniach
pantomimy.
Warto
wymienić tu: "Bachelor Boy","Summer Holiday"," On The Beach", "I Could Easily Fall" i ballady "Constantly", "The Twelfth Of Never" i "The Minute You 're Gone".
zespoły beatowe, to artysta postanowił go jeszcze udoskonalić. Nagrał m.
in. swoją wersję utworu The Rolling Stones, "Blue Turns To Grey", a później kolejny przebój numer l, piękną kompozycję "Visions".
swojej wiary. Kolejne single "In The Country" i "The Day I Met Marie"
drugie miejsce. Pomimo to była ona wielkim przebojem Eurowizji i jednym
z najpopularniejszych w tym czasie brytyjskich hitów. Niestety wkrótce
notowania Cliffa Richarda zaczęły spadać, a proponowany przez niego
repertuar nie zawsze trafiał w gusty publiczności. Pomimo sukcesu
Dynamiczny, lecz mało ambitny singel "Goodbye Sam, Hcllo Samantha" wszedł do Top 10, lecz zapowiadał koniec dobrej passy. Kolejny występ na fcstiwalu Eurowizji z piosenką "Power To All Our Friends",
Top 10. Jednak w 1976 r. artysta ponownie powrócił do aktywnej
działalności muzycznej, a kolega z The Shadows, Bruce Welch, został jego
producentem. Owocem sesji nagraniowych był bestsellerowy album I'm Nearly Famous, zawierający dwa przeboje "Miss You Nights" i "Devil Woman".
Zachęcili Cliffa, by na albumie Rock'N'Roll Juvenile zaproponował bardziej nowoczesne brzmienie. Towarzyszący płycie singel "We Don't Talk Anymore",
autorstwa Tarneya i produkcji Welcha odniósł olbrzymi sukces. W
"Nowe" brzmienie
Richarda pozwoliło mu osiągnąć następny sukces kompozycjami "Carrie" i "Wired For Sound".
z najdłużej i najaktywniej działających gwiazd muzyki pop. Wspólnie z
kwartetem The Young Ones nagrał parodię jednego ze swoich
pierwszych przebojów i ponownie osiągnął szczyt brytyjskich notowań;
wystąpił w musicalu "Time"; śpiewał pieśni religijne podczas tras
koncertowych z zespołami gospel; procesował się z magazynem "New Musical
Express" w związku z oszczerczym i pełnym złośliwych komentarzy
artykułem; został odznaczony Orderem Imperium przez brytyjską królową, a
w roku swoich 50. urodzin nagrał antywojenny utwór "From A Distance"
(standard Julie Gold). Tworzy i nagrywa nadal, zdobywszy miano jednego z
najbardziej zasłużonych i popularnych wykonawców w historii brytyjskiej
muzyki pop.
