Martha Reeves & The Vandellas

Martha Reeves (ur. 18.07.1941 r. w Detroit w stanie Michigan, USA), Annette Sterling Beard, Gloria Williams i Rosalind Ashford (ur. 2.09.1943 r. w Detroit) zadebiutowały pod nazwą The Del-This w 1961 r. jako jedna z wielu żeńskich grup wokalnych działających w Detroit, w stanie Michigan, USA.

 

Po podjęciu przez Reeves pracy sekretarki w wytwórni Tamla Motown, grupie zaproponowano nagranie promocyjnego singla wydanego przez filię koncernu, Melody, i sygnowanego przez dziewczęta nazwą The Vels.
Po fiasku płyty zespół opuściła Gloria Williams, pozostała zaś trójka skorzystała z kolejnej szansy, nagrywając pod koniec 1962 r. temat "I'll Have To Let Him Go", napisany dla Mary Wells, która nie pojawiła się na sesji.
 

Pod nazwą Martha And The Vandellas trio towarzyszyło początkowo w nagraniach innych związanych z Motown wykonawców, równocześnie rejestrując swój własny materiał. Jako sekcja studyjna wokalistki wspierały Marvina Gaye'a w przebojowym temacie "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" z 1962 r., debiut zaś w amerykańskiej Top 30 ("Come And Get These Memories") wprowadził grupę do pierwszej ligi wytwórni Motown.
 

Następny singel "Heat Wave", opracowany po mistrzowsku przez team Holland/Dozier/Holland, oddał w pełni dynamizm i nerw wykonawczyń. Piosenkarki powtórzyły z powodzeniem formułę singla w "Quick Sand", poprzedzającym ich szczytowe osiągnięcie: temat "Dancing In The Street".
Skomponowany przez Marvina Gaye'a i Williama Stevensona przebój wzywał wprawdzie do wspólnej ulicznej zabawy, ale dodatkowego posmaku przydawała mu ówczesna napięta sytuacja w murzyńskich, wielkomiejskich gettach. Hollandowie i Dozier wykorzystali cały tkwiący w muzyce potencjał, wzmacniając rytm brzęczącymi łańcuchami wprowadzając elektryzujący słuchaczy majestatyczny riff blachy. "Dancing In The Street" było najbardziej ekscytującym nagraniem dokonanym w Motown od chwili powstania wytwórni i zasłużenie trafiło na drugie miejsce amerykańskiej listy przebojów.
Późniejszym singlom zespołu brakowało, mimo usilnych prób wykonawczyń, ognia sławnego tematu. "Nowhere To Run" z 1965 r. był interesującym tanecznym przebojem, również nie pozbawionym kontekstu politycznego. W nagraniu zadebiutowała Betty Kelly z grupy Velvelette, zastępująca Annette Sterling Beard.
 

W nowym składzie zespół wprowadził do Top 10 kolejne single: "I'm Ready For Love" i "Jimmy Mack". Po sukcesie "Honey Chile" wytwórnia zdecydowała się umieścić pełne nazwisko Marthy Reeves w nazwie grupy.
Niestety w 1968 r. poważna choroba artystki na długi czas uniemożliwiła jej występy i zespół rozpadł się.
 

W 1970 r. Martha powróciła do studia, pozyskawszy do nowego składu Vandellas swoją siostrę Lois oraz inną eks-członkinię Velvelette -Sandrę Tilley. W USA nie udało im się wypromować przebojów, za to w Wielkiej Brytanii reedycja " Dancing In The Street" odniosła w 1969 r. spóźniony sukces, a na początku lat siedemdziesiątych do Top 30 trafiło kilka singli grupy.
Po przeniesieniu się firmy Motown z Detroit do Hollywood w 1972 r. Martha postanowiła zostać w mieście rodzinnym. Rozwiązała raz jeszcze grupę i wystąpiła na drogę sądową o anulowanie kontraktu, uzyskując ostatecznie zgodę na karierę solową (niezbyt zresztą fortunną). Lois przyłączyła się do zespołu Quiet Elegance. Sandra Titley wycofała się z przemysłu muzycznego, a w 1982 r. zmarła.
 

Wytwórnia Tamla zachowała wprawdzie prawa do nazwy The Vandellas. jednak nigdy nie zdecydowała się na nagrania nowych wersji przebojów z pierwszej połowy lat sześćdziesiątych bez głównej wokalistki.
Reeves, Sterling i Ashford spotykają się i występują sporadycznie do dziś. nie rezygnując jednak z wykonywanych przez siebie zawodów.
