Max Steiner [ur.10.05.1988r Wiedeń/Austria-zm.28.12.1971r Los Angeles/USA] Max Steiner, człowiek który wypracował wczesny model filmowej oprawy muzycznej. Tak jednoznacznie kojarzący się nam z klasycznym Hollywood "chór dziewic", pojawił się po raz pierwszy w filmie "Potępieniec" Johna Forda w 1935 roku. Rzadko się pamięta, że to pierwszy film, który otrzymał Oscara, za oryginalną muzykę filmową, potraktowaną w zupełnie nowatorski sposób.
W kinie amerykańskim był to przełom w traktowaniu muzyki jako integralnej części filmu, posiadającej swoją własną poetykę i nadającej specyficzny klimat całości obrazu. Po raz pierwszy w filmie hollywoodzkim, muzyka świadomie kształtowała dramaturgię obrazu. I chociaż, szczyt tej formuły miał nadejść cztery lata później w "Przeminęło z wiatrem" Victora Fleminga, to jednak szlak został przetarty właśnie w "Potępieńcu". Steiner był zresztą, bodaj najbardziej doświadczonym kompozytorem w Hollywood.
Urodzony w 1888 roku w Wiedniu, był już pod koniec XIX wieku okrzyczany "cudownym dzieckiem", kształcił się pod opieką ostatniego filharmonika wiedeńskiego - Gustava Mahlera. Mając 11 lat wystawił własną operetkę pt. "Piękna Greczynka"; był nie tylko jej kompozytorem, lecz także dyrygentem. Jako 17-latek kierował orkiestrą wodewilową w Londynie. Przed wybuchem I Wojny Światowej, zdążył ze swoją orkiestrą zjechać pół świata. Koncertował w Moskwie, Paryżu, Berlinie, a nawet w Johannesburgu. W 1914 osiedlił się w Nowym Jorku, gdzie pracował jako dyrygent i kompozytor.
W 1929 roku Studio RKO, powierzyło mu stworzenie i kierowanie swoim wydziałem muzycznym. Prowadził je przez siedem lat, do czasu gdy Warnerowie wykorzystując kryzys finansowy RKO, zaproponowali mu lepzsze warunki.
Szefem muzycznym Warner Bros. był przez 30 lat. Przeszedł na emeryturę jako 77-latek, z dorobkiem ponad 300 partytur filmowych. Do legendy przeszedł jego sprzeciw wobec umieszczenia piosenki "As Time Goes By" w filmie "Casablanca" Michaela Curtiza.
W dużej mierze to jednak jemu zawdzięczamy, że zawód kompozytora muzyki filmowej zaczął być darzony w Stanach Zjednoczonych estymą. Był nominowany 26 razy do Oscara, z czego otrzymał 3 statuetki - za "Potępieńca" (1935), " A więc, podróżniku" (1942) oraz "Odkąd wyjechałeś" (1944). Za partyturę do "Skarbu Sierra Madre" otrzymał nagrodę na Festiwalu w Wenecji.
