Nino Rota (ur. 3.12.1911r-zm. 10.04.1979r) to dla muzyki filmowej "włoski Fellini". Zresztą, z tym właśnie reżyserem najczęściej współpracował, najlepiej bowiem rozumieli się ci dwaj.
Twórca symfonii, oper i koncertów, zasłynął Rota jako "jeden z najbardziej znanych twórców w muzyce filmowej". Debiutował w 1933 r.: o filmie Treno popolare wspominał niechętnie, na następny zdecydował się dopiero dziesięć lat później. Pierwszy znany i udany (pod względem muzyki) film Roty to tragikomedia Vivere in pace (1946), następnych było coraz więcej: Obsesja, Ucieczka do Francji, Szklana góra. La Strada z pięknym walcem Piosenka Gelsominy, Wróg publiczny numer 1, Noce Cabirii, Wojna i pokój, Tama na Pacyfiku, Białe noce, Wielka wojna, Słodkie życie, W pełnym słońcu, Rocco i jego bracia, Najlepszy z wrogów, Boccaccio 70, Człowiek mafii. Lampart, Osiem i pół, Julietta i duchy, Poskromienie złośnicy, Romeo i Julia, Satyricon, Ojciec chrzestny (Grammy w 1972 r., Oscar w 1974 r. za drugą część filmu), Rzym, Amarcord, Próba orkiestry i Śmierć na Nilu - w większości obrazy najznakomitszych reżyserów, jak Coppola, Fellini i Visconti.
W 1975 r. Rota powiedział: "Moja muzyka już się zestarzała, są inni, lepsi ode mnie, komponuję lepiej, więcej i szybciej. Kiedyś ludzie o mnie zapomną - to możliwe. Chciałbym jednak, aby wiedzieli, że komponowałem — i nadal to robię — nie dla siebie, nie dla filmu, lecz dla nich".
