Urodzona
w rodzinie związanej z przemysłem rozrywkowym, debiutowała jako dziecko
we własnym programie telewizyjnym, zaś nagrodą za zwycięstwo w
konkursie młodych talentów w 1966 r, była podróż do Nowego Jorku. Występ
w popularnym programie "Tonight Show" zaowocował kontraktem nagraniowym
z wytwórnią Capitol.
W 1971 r. zadebiutowała na listach przebojów tematem Marii Magdaleny "l Don't Know How To Love Him" z musicalu "Jesus Christ Superstar" Andrew Lloyda Webbera i Tima Rice'a. Rok później singel "I'm A Woman" rozszedł się w USA w milionowym nakładzie, a następne pięciolecie przyniosło Helen Reddy kilkanaście dalszych przebojowych nagrań.
Szczyt listy przebojów osiągnęła ballada country "Delta Dawn" autorstwa Alexa Harveya (z 1973 r.) i przejmujący temat "Angie Baby" (z 1974 r.). W 1976 r. Reddy wylansowała kompozycję spółki autorskiej Carole King/Gerry Coffin "I Can't Hear You No More", zaś cykl przebojów zamknęła pochodząca z 1964 r. piosenka Cilli Black "You're My World", której współproducentem był Kim Fowley.
W filmie Francoisa Truffauta "The Man Who Loved Women" (Mężczyzna, który kochał kobiety" z 1983 r.) wykonywała temat przewodni "Little Boys".
