W karierze pomógł mu Gordon Mills, wówczas wokalista grupy The Viscounts,
a z czasem kompozytor przebojów i menedżer.
W 1967 r. Mills postanowił pomóc staremu koledze. Dorsey przyjął pseudonim Engelbert Humperdinck,
zainspirowany nazwiskiem niemieckiego kompozytora z przełomu wieków,
autora opery dziecięcej "Jaś I Małgosia". Zmienił też repertuar na
balladowy.
Następny, "Release Me", okazał się strzałem w dziesiątkę. W
okupował szczyt Top 20, skutecznie blokując nań drogę "Penny Lane" i "Strawberry Fields Forever" Beatlesów. Ballada "There Goes My Everything" trafiła na drugie miejsce listy, a "Last Waltz"
powtórzył sukces debiutu pozycją i wysokością sprzedanego nakładu. W
Nieźle ustawiony głos i romantyczna aparycja przyciągały na koncerty tłumy słuchaczek, czemu towarzyszyło pasmo sukcesów kolejnych singli: "Am I That Easy To Forget", "A Man Without Love", "Les Bicyclettes De Belsize" (z motywem wykorzystanym w filmie muzycznym pod tym samym
tytułem, "podrabiającym" "Parasolki z Cherbourga" Demy'ego ), "The Way It Used To Be" i "Winter World Of Love" (bożonarodzeniowy przebój 1969 r
Podobnie jak drugi podopieczny Millsa, Tom Jones, zaprzestał na pewien czas nagrywania płyt, by powrócić w 1987 r. albumem Remember I Love You, na którym śpiewał m.in. w duecie z Glorią Gaynor.
