Na początku lat sześćdziesiątych osiadł w llos Angeles. Działał jako producent, komponował m.in. Make Believe dla Ricka Nelsona ; a także, z coraz większym powodzeniem, koncertował w klubach, np. w Whiskey A Go Go. Z werwą wykonywał przeboje rock n'rollowe i soulowe, m.in. kompozycje Chucka Berry'ego, Williego Dixona, Huey „Piano" Smitha i Smokeya Robinsona, a także własne utwory w rytmie boogie.
Od 1964 do 1972 jego nagrania spotkały się w Stanach Zjednoczonych z uznaniem zwolenników muzyki tanecznej. Największy rozgłos zyskały: Memphis, Maybellene, Mountain Of Love, Midnight Special, Seventh Son, Secret Agent Man, Poor Side Of Town, Boby I Need Your Lovin', Tracks Of My Tears, Summer Rain, Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu.
W 1966r założył własną firmę płytową, Soul City, a wkrótce potem wydawnictwo muzyczne, Johnny Rivers Music. Zajął się karierą m.in. The Fifth Dimension. Po 1972r wykonywał zarówno rock'n'rollowe przeboje sprzed lat (z towarzyszeniem Briana Wilsona nagrał Help Me Rhonda z repertuaru The Beach Boys), jak i poetyckie ballady Jamesa Taylora, Vana Morrisona czy Jacksona Browne'a. Największy przebój z tego okresu: Swayin' To The Music (Slow Dancin'). W latach osiemdziesiątych zwrócił się ku muzyce religijnej.
