Paul Revere and The Raiders

 Zespół założony w Portland w stanie Oregon, USA, w 1961 r. przez pianistę Paula Revere (ur. 7.01.1938 r. w Harvard w stanie Nevada), który do składu swojej klubowej grupy The Downbeats dokooptował Marka Lindsaya (ur. 9.03.1942 r. w Eugene w stanie Oregon, śpiew, saksofon). Po reorganizacji składu i zaproszeniu do współpracy Drake'a Levina (gitara), Mike'a Hollidaya (bas) i Michaela Smitha (perkusja), formacja przyjęła nazwę Paul Revere And The Nightriders (później The Raiders).

 

Popularność zdobyła singlami "Beatnik Sticks" i "Like Long Hair" (ten drugi wszedł do amerykańskiej Top 40). Disc jockey i menedżer grupy Roger Hart sfinansował nagranie taśmy demo i wkrótce Paul Revere And The Raiders podpisali prestiżowy kontrakt nagraniowy z wytwórnią CBS/Columbia. W 1963 r. na singlu ukazała się ich wersja przeboju "Louie Louie" i chociaż lokalnie odniosła duży sukces, większą popularnością cieszyła się w wykonaniu lokalnych rywali zespołu The Kingsmen, którzy wprowadzili ją do ogólnokrajowych notowań hitów.
 

Następny singel ujrzał światło dzienne dopiero rok później, a w tym czasie grupę opuścił Holliday zastąpiony przez Phila Volka. "Louie Go Home" potwierdził dobrą formę kwintetu, ale prawdziwym hitem stała się piosenka z 1965 r. "Steppin' Out". Od tej pory grupa była stałym gościem telewizyjnego show "Where The Action Is" Dicka Clarka.
 

Możliwość częstego pokazywania się w telewizji zaowocowała serią klasycznych singli popowych, m.in. "Just Like Me" (z 1965 r.), "Kicks", "Hungry", "Good Things" (wszystkie z 1966 r.) i "Him Or Me What's It Gonna Be" (z 1967r.), których producentem był Terry Melcher. Jednak sceniczny image zespołu (wysokie do uda buty, obcisłe koszule z żabotami i koronkami, trójkątne kapelusze) był krytykowany przez fanów undergroundowej sceny rockowej. Odejście Smitha, Levina i Volka wpłynęło na zmianę brzmienia grupy, powstało nawet podejrzenie, że wspaniały dźwięk nagrań studyjnych był efektem udziału w nich muzyków sesyjnych. Nowi członkowie The Raiders, Freddie Weller (gitara), Keith Allison (bas) i Joe (Correro) Junior (perkusja) byli jednak nie mniej utalentowanymi i profesjonalnymi muzykami, co udowodnili na albumach Hard & Heavy i Collage.
 

Pomimo zmiennego szczęścia na listach przebojów zespół utrzymał wysoką pozycję gospodarza programu telewizyjnego "Happening 68". W 1969 r. Lindsay rozpoczął równolegle karierę solową, lecz choć singel "Arizona" został sprzedany w ilości ponad miliona egzemplarzy, późniejsze wydawnictwa nie przyniosły spodziewanego sukcesu. Dwa lata później The Raiders odnieśli duży sukces singlem "Indian Reservation", który wspiął się na szczyt amerykańskiej listy bestsellerów (w Wielkiej Brytanii piosenkę tę spopularyzował wcześniej Don Fardon), ale jak okazało się później, był ich ostatnim hitem z pierwszej dwudziestki.
 

Weller rozpoczął karierę solową szukając szczęścia na rynku country. Revere i Lindsay usiłowali jednak utrzymać zespół na powierzchni, szczególnie po zakończeniu współpracy z dotychczasową wytwórnią płytową. Pierwszy z nich został menedżerem grupy, organizując kilka sesji nagraniowych dla niezależnych wytwórni płytowych. Zespół powrócił na krótko podczas uroczystych obchodów dwusetlecia Stanów Zjednoczonych. W 1983 r. na rynku ukazały się remiksy starych przebojów i kilka nowych kompozycji, opublikowane we własnej wytwórni grupy - Raiders America. Powrót po latach nie trwał jednak długo. Chociaż zespół nadal istnieje, a Paul Revere wciąż pełni funkcję frontmana. The Raiders występują rzadko.
