W szkole średniej poznał swoją przyszłą żonę i współautorkę piosenek Margaret Ann. Podczas studiów muzycznych w Arkansas University grał w różnych zespołach jazzowych i tanecznych. W 1951r wstąpił do lotnictwa Stanów Zjednoczonych i stacjonował w Oklahoma. Tam założył zespól jazzowy The Velvetones, z którym występował w lokalnej stacji telewizyjnej.
W połowie lat 70-tych Rich wylansowal jeszcze in. przebojowe piosenki, m.in.: There Won’t Be Anymore, She Called Me Baby, A Very Special Love Song, I Love My Friend oraz Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High). Wartym odnotowania jest również jego udział w filmie Clinta Eastwooda Every Which Way but Loose. Na początku lat 90-tych nagrał płytę Pictures and Paintings, na której umieścił standardy jazzowe, a wśród nich Mood Indigo Duke’a Ellingtona oraz standard muzyki gospel - I Feel Like Going Home.
Jego piosenki włączyło do repertuaru liczne grono wykonawców, m.in. The Battlefield Band, Charles Brown, Johnny Cash, Mark Chesnutt, Elvis Costello, The Four Freshmen, Lefty Frizzell, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ronnie Hawkins, Tom Jones.
