Houston urodził się w Bossier City w północno - zachodniej Luizjanie 9 grudnia 1935 roku. Był potomkiem Sama Houstona , pierwszego prezydenta Republiki Teksasu i generała Konfederacji Roberta E. Lee . Jego ojcem chrzestnym był piosenkarz pop z lat dwudziestych Gene Austin , który nie był spokrewniony z Stephenem F. Austinem , kolejnym założycielem Teksasu . Podobnie jak Austin, Houston jako młodzieniec mieszkał krótko w domu na skrzyżowaniu ulic Marshall i Goodwill w Minden , siedzibie parafii Webster w północno-zachodniej Luizjanie. „Almost Persuaded” rozpoczął serię pięciu najlepszych singli Houstona do 1973 roku, w tym sześć kolejnych numerowanych: „ With One Exception ” i „ You Mean the World to Me ” (1967); „ Have a Little Faith” i „Already It's Heaven ” (1968); „ Baby, Baby (I Know You're a Lady) ” (1970); oraz duet My Elusive Dreams z 1967 roku z Tammy Wynette .
