Manhattans

Grupa założona w 1962 r. w Jersey City w stanie New Jersey, 15 kilometrów od nowojorskiego Manhattanu. Największe sukcesy odnosiła w latach 70.
Pierwszymi członkami zespołu byli: wokalista prowadzący George Smith, śpiewający basem Winfred "Blue" Lovett (ur. 16.11.1943 r.), tenor Edward Bivins (ur. 15.01.1942 r.), tenor Kenneth Kelley (ur. 9.01.1943 r.) oraz baryton Richard Taylor.

Specjalizując się w nastrojowych balladach, grupa nagrywała początkowo dla wytwórni Carnival w Newark. Począwszy od pochodzącego z 1965 r. utworu "I Wanna Be (Your Everything)" osiem zarejestrowanych dla niej singli trafiło na amerykańską listę przebojów rhythm 'n 'bluesowych.

W 1969 r. Manhattans przenieśli się do wytwórni Deluxe Records, dla której w 1972 r. nagrali swój pierwszy przebój z Top 10 zestawień rhythm'n'bluesowych, "One Life To Live". W 1971 r. zmarł Smith, a zastąpił go Gerald Alston (ur. 8.11.1942 r.). W 1973 r. Manhattans przeszli pod skrzydła wytwórni Columbia, gdzie ich bardzo słodki soulowy styl zaowocował całą serią przebojów z Top 10 zestawień rhythm'n'bluesowych.

Znalazły się wśród nich m.in. "Kiss And Say Goodbye" (w 1976 r. także numer l na liście muzyki pop) i "Shining Star" (w 1980 r. numer 4 na liście rhythm'n'bluesowej i numer 5 w kategorii pop). W 1983 r. na 4. miejsce zestawień trafiła kompozycja "Crazy", lecz od tego momentu popularność Manhattans zaczęła słabnąć mimo dalszych nagrań rejestrowanych dla Columbii.
W 1977 r. zespół opuścił Taylor (rok później zmarł). Jego koledzy nie zaangażowali nikogo na jego miejsce.
