Po odejściu De Alliego grupa zadebiutowała nagraną dla wytwórni Apple Beatlesów i wykonywaną w rytmie reggae wersją "Give Peace A Chance" Plastic Ono Band. Członkowie Hot Chocolate byli też autorami piosenki "Think About Your Children", skomponowanej dla nagrywającej w tej samej wytwórni Mary Hopkin.
W 1970 r. grupa podpisała kontrakt z firmą RAK Mickiego Mosta. I tym razem muzycy potwierdzili swoje autorskie talenty tematem "Bet Yer Life I Do", napisanym dla Herman's Hermits. We wrześniu 1970 r. na listach przebojów znalazł się melodyjny temat grupy - "Love Is Life".
Rok później zespół zasilili gitarzysta Harvey Hinsley (ur. 19.01. 1948 r. w Northampton w Anglii) - występujący poprzednio z Cliffem Bennettem - oraz nowy perkusista, Tony Connor (ur. 6.04.1947 r. w Romford w hrabstwie Essex, Anglia). Brown i Wilson okazali się istną fabryką przebojów; warto wymienić chociażby "I Believe (In Love)", "Brother Louie" (w USA na szczycie listy w wersji zespołu Stories), "Emma", "A Child's Prayer", "You Sexy Thing", "Put Your Love In Me", "No Doubt About It", "Girl Crazy", "It Started With A Kiss" i "What Kinda Boy You Looking For (Girl)".
W 1975 r. Wilson opuścił formację, a rolę basisty przejął Patrick Olive. Nie spowodowało to przerwy w paśmie sukcesów grupy. Latem 1977 r. Hot Chocolate wypromowali i doprowadzili na szczyt listy brytyjskiej kompozycję Russa Ballarda "So You Win Again".
Kariera grupy dobiegła końca dopiero w 1987 r. po opuszczeniu jej przez wokalistę i kompozytora Errola Browna, którego ogolona na łyso głowa była nieodłącznym wizualnym atrybutem Hot Chocolate. Próba zastąpienia go Grantem Evelynem nie przyniosła zadowalających rezultatów. Po odejściu z rozwiązanego wkrótce potem zespołu Brown nagrał przebojowy singel "Personal Touch" i solowy album That's How Love Is.
