Sam Cooke [właściwie Samuel Cooke]-ur.22.01.1931 r w Clarksdale w stanie Mississippi.Zmarł 11.12.1964 w Los Angeles.Jako nastolatek był członkiem zespołu The Highway QCs,a potem zastąpił Roberta Harrisa w Soul Stirrers,gdzie był wiodącym wokalistą w latach 1951-1956.Producent wytwórni Specialty dla której nagrywali,"Bumps" Blackwell zaproponował mu nagrania solowe pod pseudonimem "Dale Cook".Nagrania nie spodobały się szefowi Specialty,który sprzedał prawa autorskie dla wytwórni Keen,w zamian za wysokie honorarium dla Cooke' a.Jeden z tych utworów "You send me" sprzedał się w nakładzie ok. 2mln egzemplarzy.
W 1960r przenosi się do RCA,zakłada też własne wytwórnie Sar i Derby w których wydaje płyty The Valentinos i The Simms Twins.
Kariera artysty rozwijała się świetnie dzięki wielu przebojowym singlom,ale niespodziewanie przerwała ją tragiczna śmierć.11 grudnia 1964r został zastrzelony przez kierowniczkę motelu w L.A. po przypadkowej sprzeczce z młodą dziewczyną.
Dziedzictwo Cooke' a przejęli jego różni uczniwie tacy jak Johnnie Taylor,czy Bobby Womack z The Valentinos.Jego piosenki śpiewali minn.Rod Stewart,Animals,cat Stevens,czy Rolling Stones ,których wersja "Little red rooster" bardziej nawiązywała do interpretacji Cooke' a niż Howlin Wolfa.
