Paul McCartney

Ur. 18.06.1942 r. w Liverpoolu, Anglia. Mimo że w czasie kariery w zespole The Beatles interesy grupy brały górę nad osobistymi preferencjami jej członków, basista i wokalista McCartney znalazł kilka wolnych chwil, by poświęcić się także i innym projektom. Wiele z nich wynikało z zawieranych przez Paula przyjaźni czy też jego własnych zainteresować, które obejmowały współpracę produkcyjną z Cliffem Bennettem, formacjami Paddy, Klaus And Gibson oraz Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band i uczestnictwo w sesjach nagraniowych takich artystów jak Donovan, Paul Jones i Steve Miller. Pod pseudonimem Bernard Webb napisał również piosenkę "Woman" dla duetu Peter And Gordon. Przedsięwzięcia tego rodzaju stały się o wiele częstsze po założeniu wytwórni Apple, pod egidą której Paul kierował początkami kariery Mary Hopkin i zespołu Badfinger. Pojawił się także gościnnie na wydawnictwach Jackiego Lomaxa i Jamesa Taylora. Jednak pomimo tej z trudem zdobytej niezależności, artysta zebrał spore cięgi od krytyków po ukazaniu się jego solowego debiutu McCartney, którego wydanie zbiegło się z pojawieniem się na rynku Let It Be The Beatles i z jego decyzją odejścia z zespołu. Skromny debiut Paula uznano za zbyt sentymentalny i pełen pobłażania dla własnych możliwości artysty, choć jego nastrojowość okazała się miłą niespodzianką w morzu wszechobecnego heavy rocka. Zamieszczona na longplayu piosenka "Maybe I'm Amazed" była jednym z najbardziej udanych utworów Paula.

Album Ram przypisany Paulowi i jego żonie Lindzie (z domu Eastman, ur. 24.09.1942 r. w Scarsdale w stanie Nowy Jork, USA) spotkał się z podobnym przyjęciem, a krytycy najczęściej zarzucali mu brak przeciwwagi do popadającego zbyt często w tani sentymentalizm wokalisty. Mimo wszystko pochodzący z albumu singel "Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey" dotarł do 1. miejsca listy przebojów w USA, a drugi - "Another Day" osiągnął 2. pozycję w zestawieniach brytyjskich. Biorący udział w sesjach perkusista, Danny Seiwell, otrzymał zaproszenie dołączenia do tworzącego się zespołu, którego skład poszerzył również były członek The Moody Blues, Denny Laine. Kwartet ten, po przyjęciu nazwy Wings, zarejestrował album Wildlife, który zaznaczył się głównie włączeniem do aranżacji elementów reggae i klasycznego rock'n'rolla.

Poszerzywszy skład formacji o gitarzystę Henry'ego McCullogha, McCartney zabrał swe "Skrzydła" na krótkie, zorganizowane ad hoc, tournee po brytyjskich college'ach. Tuż po nim na rynku pojawiły się trzy, bardzo różniące się single: "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" ("Zwróćcie Irlandię Irlandczykom", zakazany przez BBC), "Mary Had A Little Lamb" i "Hi Hi Hi"/"C Moon" (wszystkie z 1972 r.). W 1973 r. Wings nagrali utrzymaną w typowo McCartneyowskim stylu balladę "My Love" i album Red Rose Speedway, do tej pory najbardziej sformalizowane wydawnictwo artysty. Plany związane z rejestracją czwartej płyty zakłóciło co prawda odejście McCullougha i Seiwella, ale pozostałe trio odbyło bardzo udane sesje w studiu Lagos.
Sporym osiągnięciem okazał się album Band On The Run, który podreperował nadszarpniętą nieco reputację McCartneya. Walcząc z mało pochlebnymi głosami krytyków, artysta przedstawił tym razem pełną ognia pasję i oddanie swej pracy, których tak bardzo brakowało na jego wcześniejszych wydawnictwach. Od razu też zebrał komercyjne owoce tego sukcesu, gdy dwa pochodzące z longplaya single - tytułowy i "Jet" - trafiły do Top 10 amerykańskiej i brytyjskiej listy przebojów. Sporym przebojem stał się również nieco lżejszy utwór "Junior's Farm".
Niebawem odrodzeni Wings - w składzie poszerzonym o Jimmy'ego McCullougha (gitara, eks-Thunderclap Newman i Stone The Crows) i Joe Englisha (perkusja) - nagrali studyjne albumy Venus And Mars i Wings At The Speed Of Sound oraz imponujący reportaż z wcześniejszego tournee Wings Over America. Mimo że wspomniane albumy nie wspięły się na artystyczne wyżyny Band On The Run, udało im się umocnić pozycję McCartneya na rynku muzycznym, co potwierdziły również pochodzące z nich przebojowe single: "Listen To What The Man Said" (z 1975 r.), "Silly Love Songs" i "Let 'Em In" (oba z 1976 r.).

Chociaż dalszy rozwój zespołu został spowolniony na pewien czas przez odejście McCullougha i Englisha, w 1977 r. Wings odnieśli swój najbardziej spektakularny sukces wraz z nagraniem singla "Mull Of Kintyre", będącego cukierkowym peanem na cześć szkockiej samotni należącej do Paula i Lindy. Singel przez dziewięć tygodni utrzymywał się na szczycie brytyjskiej listy przebojów, a w samej tylko Wielkiej Brytanii sprzedano ponad 2,5 miliona jego egzemplarzy. Wydany w 1978 r. album London Town uznano powszechnie za rozczarowujący, jednak pochodzący z niego singel "With A Little Luck" trafił na pierwsze miejsce amerykańskiej listy przebojów.

Kolejna propozycja Wings Back To The Egg - mimo że nagrana w składzie wzmocnionym o gitarzystę Laurence'a Jubera i perkusistę Steve'a Holly'ego - uznana została za jedno ze słabszych osiągnięć zespołu. Wings zakończyli oficjalnie działalność co prawda dopiero w kwietniu 1981 r.,jednak solowe nagrania McCartneya: "Wonderful Christmastime" (z 1979 r.), "Coming Up" (z 1980 r.) i McCartney II stały się początkiem nowego okresu w jego karierze. Mimo międzynarodowego sukcesu, który zapewniły mu nagrane w duecie piosenki "Ebony And Ivory" (ze Stevie Wonderem) i "The Girl Is Mine" (z Michaelem Jacksonem) oraz solowe "Say Say Say" i "Pipes Of Peace", albumom wokalisty brakowało konsekwencji i zwartości. Fabularny film McCartneya "Give My Regards To Broadstreet" zebrał ostre cięgi od krytyków; podobny los spotkał płytę ze ścieżką dźwiękową, mimo że pełna optymizmu ballada "No More Lonely Nights" trafiła na 2. miejsce brytyjskiej listy przebojów.

W tym okresie liczba nagrywanych przez McCartneya płyt znacznie zmalała. Co prawda współpraca nawiązana z gitarzystą Erickiem Stewartem, wpłynęła bardzo korzystnie na ostateczny kształt albumu Press To Play, nie zdołała jednak powstrzymać dość poważnego spadku aktywności artysty. Longplay Cnoba B CCCP, będący składanką starych przebojów, a przeznaczony do wydania wyłącznie w Związku Radzieckim, zapewnił mu tak potrzebny w tym okresie rozgłos, zanim szeroko nagłaśniana współpraca z Elvisem Costello dała wyniki w postaci albumu Spike tego artysty i własnej płyty McCartneya Flowers In The Dirt.

Mimo że płyta ta była jego najlepszą propozycją od czasu Venus And Mars, pochodzące zeń single nie zdołały dotrzeć w wyższe rejony list przebojów. Światowe tournee, w czasie którego Paulowi i Lindzie towarzyszyli Robbie McIntosh (eks-Pretenders; gitara), Wix (instr. klawiszowe), Hamish Stuart (eks-Average White Band; bas, śpiew) i Chris Whitten (perkusja) udowodniło, że McCartney wciąż potrafi dostarczać przybyłej publiczności rozrywki na wysokim poziomie. Wykorzystując dorobek Beatlesów, Wings i utwory solowe artysta wciąż przekonuje o swoich wielkich możliwościach, które pozwalają mu pozostać na szczycie przez ponad ćwierć wieku. Dowodem na niezwykle szeroki zasięg jego zainteresowań stała się współpraca z Carlem Davisem, której owocem było klasyczne "Oratorium Liverpoolskie". W jego prawykonaniu wzięła udział jedna z największych śpiewaczek operowych Kiri Tekanawa (polska prapremiera dzieła odbyła się w czerwcu 1994 r. w kościele Św. Katarzyny w Krakowie).

W 1993 r. wśród plotek o możliwym połączeniu z George'em Harrisonem i Ringo Starrem artysta nagrał album Off The Ground. W 1995 r. plotki stały się faktem. Wspólna praca trzech żyjących Beatlesów zaowocowała premierowym nagraniem... całej czwórki. Mowa o "Free As A Bird" skomponowanym i nagranym w wersji demo w 1977 r. przez Johna Lennona, który pod czujnym producenckim uchem Jeffa Lynne'a uzupełniła w 1994 r. pozostała trójka.
