Larry Gatlin

Larry Wayne Gatlin (ur . 2 maja 1948 r. w Seminole w Teksasie ) - amerykański muzyk country i autor tekstów, który wystąpił u boku swoich braci Steve (ur . 4 kwietnia 1951 r. ) i Rudy (ur. 20 sierpnia 1952 r.) jako "Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers " odniósł sukces w latach 80-tych.

Pierwszy publiczny występ Gatlin miał w wieku sześciu lat. W towarzystwie młodszych braci Steve i Rudy'ego wziął udział w konkursie talentów. Już we wczesnych latach życia trójka stworzyła styl zbliżony do harmonii   Everly Brothers , z którym przeważnie recytowali pieśni gospel . Przez jakiś czas pojawiali się w każdą niedzielę w programie lokalnej stacji radiowej.

Po ukończeniu studiów Gatlin przeniósł się ze stypendium na University of Houston , gdzie dołączył do grupy gospel "The Imperials". W Las Vegas , gdzie Imperiali pojawili się w Jimmy Dean Show, poznał Dottie West i przedstawił jej kilka własnych piosenek. West nagrała dwie jego piosenki i stała się jego patronem.
Dottie West zaprowadziła go do Nashville we wczesnych latach siedemdziesiątych ,gdzie dostał pracę jako autor tekstów w nowo założonym wydawnictwie muzycznym. Pracował również jako wokalista w zespole wspierającym Krisa Kristoffersona , dla którego napisał także kilka piosenek. Za pośrednictwem Kristoffersona Gatlin otrzymał kontrakt płytowy w 1973r w wytwórni  Monument .Po produkcji swojego pierwszego albumu The Pilgrim sprowadził swoich braci do Nashville, którzy w międzyczasie założyli grupę Young Country wraz z siostrą. Z albumu wydano kilka singli, które można było umieścić w środkowej części Country Top 100.

Również na następnym albumie jego bracia pracowali razem. Singiel Broken Lady osiągnął piąte miejsce w 1976 roku i został nagrodzony w następnym roku nagrodą Grammy za najlepszą  piosenkę country roku . W tym samym roku Gatlin pojawił się po raz pierwszy w Grand Ole Opry . Pierwszy hit z numerem 1, który nagrał w 1978 roku to I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love .

W 1979 roku przeniósł się do wytwórni Columbia . Od tego momentu bracia nazywali siebie "Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers". Solista z towarzyszącą grupą stał się zespołem. Już pierwszy singiel, All The Gold In California , znalazł się na pierwszym miejscu listy przebojów country i został singlem roku Akademii Muzyki Country . Lata osiemdziesiąte stały się najbardziej udaną dekadą Gatlinów. Jednak zdecydowanie nie każda piosenka mogła zostać umieszczona w pierwszej dwudziestce. Kolejny hit z numerem 1, Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer To You) , odniósł sukces dopiero w 1984 roku. Potem nastąpiła przerwa w karierze, gdy Larry Gatlin walczył z uzależnieniem od alkoholu i narkotyków w klinice . Jego bracia również zdołali uciec od alkoholu.

Powrócił sukces. Już w 1986 r. Mieli kolejną dziesiątkę hitów dzięki " She Used To Be Somebody's Baby" . Od czasu przeprowadzki do wytwórni Columbia, jej muzyka jest coraz bardziej zorientowana na mainstream i pop. Dane dotyczące sprzedaży udowodniły, że mają rację. Niemniej jednak pod koniec dekady ich popularność zaczęła słabnąć. Przeprowadzka do wytwórni Capitol w 1989 roku nie mogła zatrzymać tego trendu. W 1992 r. Gatlinowie odbyli oficjalną pożegnalną trasę (po dziesięcioletniej przerwie wznowili występy publiczne w 2003 r.). Nadal nagrywali albumy dla mniejszych wytwórni. Larry Gatlin przyjął w 1993 roku rolę w musicalu na Broadwayu Will Rogers Follies .
