Mindless Self Indulgence

 Mindless Self Indulgence, powszechnie skracani do MSI (w Polsce również Majndlesi), są amerykańskim zespołem synthpunkowym założonym w 1997 roku w Nowym Jorku. Styl muzyczny grupy to mieszanka punk rocka, rocka alternatywnego, muzyki elektronicznej, industrialu oraz hip-hopu. Swoją muzykę określają jako "industrial jungle pussy punk". Nazwa grupy pochodzi od nazwy albumu, który został nagrany przez jednego z członków zespołu w połowie lat 90. Wydali 8 albumów, cztery EPki, jeden album na żywo.

Mindless Self Indulgence to taki zespół, obok którego ciężko przejść obojętnie. Trudno jest być gdzieś po środku, albo się ich uwielbia, albo nie znosi. Głównie ze względu na specyficzną otoczkę, którą stworzyli wokół siebie. Z pozoru jest to prosta muzyka, miejscami nawet chaotyczna. Krótkie, melodyjne kawałki, łączące w sobie jednak mnóstwo wpływów i gatunków: punk, electro, industrial czasem elementy hip hopu czy też muzyki inspirowanej kreskówkami. To wszystko okraszone specyficznymi tekstami, bardzo często wulgarnymi i seksistowskimi. Sami określają swoją twórczość jako „industrial jungle pussy punk”. To rodzaj humoru, który na pewno spodoba się fanom serialu South Park…
Najbardziej wyrazistą postacią Majndlesów jest ich ekscentryczny lider Jimmy Urine.
Zespół powstał w 1997 roku w Nowym Jorku z inicjatywy Jimmy'ego Urine'a (to przydomek artystyczny - prawdziwe nazwisko tego pana to James Euringer) wokalisty i kompozytora. W zespole grają też Steve, Righ? (Steven Montano) jako gitarzysta, LynZ (Lindsey Ann Way Ballato) jako basistka i wreszcie Kitty (Jennifer Dunn) jako perkusistka.
Pierwsza płyta Tight jest zdecydowanie najbardziej rockowa z całego dorobku zespołu, w kolejnych latach charakter twórczości Mindless Self Indulgence nieco się zmieni, choć esensja pozostanie oryginalna i nienaruszona. Jednak już w czasach swoich narodzin "Majndlesi" dawali radę. Najbardziej znanym utworem z debiutu MSI jest zdecydowanie Molly:
W kolejnych latach Mindless Self Indulgence zrobiło krok w stronę muzyki elektronicznej. Wyraźniej słychać syntezatory i sztuczne nuty, kawałki stają się pocięte i brzmią jeszcze mniej "naturalnie" niż we wczesnych latach.
Do tej pory Mindless Self Indulgence wydało cztery studyjne albumy: Tight, Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy, You'll Rebel to Anything oraz If.

Mack 10

D'Mon Rolison urodził się w 1971 roku w Inglewood w rodzinie o korzeniach puertorykańsko-afrykańskich. Tuż po ukończeniu szkoły podstawowej wstąpił do lokalnego gangu Bloods i pozostaje z nim związany aż do dzisiaj.
Na rapowej scenie pierwsze kroki stawiał na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych, biorąc udział w licznych imprezach lokalnej sceny. Nawiązanie współpracy ze słynną Priority Records zaowocowało wydaniem pięciu albumów. Pierwszy z nich, zatytułowany po prostu 'Mack 10' (1995) ukazał się w okresie szczytowej popularności rapu z zachodniego wybrzeża. Utwór 'Foe Life' nagrany z Ice Cube'em błyskawicznie zbobył popularność i skłonił artystów do nagrania wspólnego longplay'a.
 Po krótkich pracach do zespołu dołączył raper WC i cała trójka jako Westside Connection nagrała krążek 'Bow Down' (1996). Dobre przyjęcie przez fanów otworzyło wszystkim trzem emce kolejne wrota w rap biznesie.
 Rok 1996 to także drugi solowy album Mc 10 : 'Based On A True Story'. Już rok później ukazało się 'The Recipe', wydawnictwo na którym tylko jeden track był solowym numerem D'Mona. Warto również wspomnieć, że Mack 10 był stroną w jednym z większych beef'ów na zachodnim wybrzeżu między Ice Cub'em i Cypress Hill. W kawałku o tytule "Ice Cube Killah" gdzie B-Real nawiązując do pseudonimu rapera rymuje "…take your name/ analyze it/ my name should be Mack 11/ I'm a higher caliber MC/ there's no question,".
Po sukcesach pierwszych trzech płyt (każda z nich pokryła się złotem), następne były już raczej słabo odbierane przez krytykę i sprzedawały się w niskim nakładzie. Po wydaniu 'Hoo Bangin The Mixtape' (1999) i 'Paper Route' raper opuścił Priority Records i wstąpił do Cash Money Records.

Niestety nawet wytwórni z Nowego Orleanu nie udało się wypromować nowych płyt artysty. 'Bang Or Ball' (2001) i 'Ghetto,Gutter And Gangster' (2003) sprzedawały się tak kiepsko, że Mac nie mógł znaleźć nowego wydawcy. Również w 2003 roku raper wziął udział w nagraniu 'Terrorist Threats' - sequela klasycznego debiutu Westside Connection.
W 2005 została wydana płyta 'Hustler's Handbook' . Zagrał też wiele epizodycznych ról w filmach. Obecnie zajmuje się promowaniem swojego labelu Hoo Bangin Records, w którym nagrywało wielu znanych raperów np MC Eiht.
Po kłótni z Ice Cubem w 2008 roku Mack 10 opuścił WC.
Ostatnim do tej pory dziełem członka Bloods jest 'Soft White' wydany w 2009 roku, na której gościnnie udzielili się Rick Ross, Lil' Wayne. Birdman, Akon, Red Cafe, Glasses Malone, Jazze Pha, J. Holiday oraz Anthony Hamilton.

Allan Sherman

Allan Sherman-właśc. Allan Copelon, ur. 30.11.1924 r. w Chicago w stanie Illinois, USA; zm. 21.11.1973 r. w Los Angeles w Kalifornii. Allan Sherman był bardzo popularnym wykonawcą w latach 60., znanym z autorskich parodii piosenek popowych i folkowych. Po rozwodzie rodziców w 1930 r. Sherman mieszkał z matką i uczęszczał do 21 różnych szkół w Chicago, Los Angeles, Nowym Jorku i Miami. Po ukończeniu college'u na początku lat 40-tych i odbyciu służby wojskowej zaczął komponować.

 Jednym z jego pierwszych utworów była muzyczna parodia, w której Żyd Sherman obsadził siebie w roli Hitlera. W 1947 r. zaczął pracować w telewizji, pisząc żarty i skecze na potrzeby różnych programów. W 1951 r. rozpoczął występy w popularnym amerykańskim show "I've Got A Secret". które kontynuował przez siedem lat. 

Później pisywał do programu Steve'a Allena, lecz w 1960 r. stracił pracę. Szczęście znów uśmiechnęło się do niego, kiedy na przyjęciu u Harpo Marxa, gdzie zabawiał przybyłych gości, został zauważony przez łowcę talentów Bulletsa Durgoma. Durgom, który wylansował m.in. Jackie Gleasona, przekonał firmę Warner Brothers do podpisania kontraktu z Shermanem.
 

Wytwórnia zdecydowała, że artysta będzie śpiewał piosenki folkowe. Pierwszy album Shermana My Son, The Folk Singer, wydany w październiku 1962 r. był największym hitem Warner Brothers tamtych czasów. Artysta skupił się na humorze żydowskich przedmieść, zmieniając tak znane folkowe piosenki jak "Matilda" Harry'ego Belafonte w "My Zelda", a "The Streets Of Laredo" w "The Streets Of Miami". Francuski standard "Frere Jacques" zmienił się w "Sarah Jackman", a amerykańska pieśń patriotyczna "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic" w "The Ballad Of Harry Lewis" - opowieść o sprzedawcy odzieży. Album debiutancki, podobnie jak i dwa kolejne, dotarł do pierwszego miejsca amerykańskiej listy bestsellerów płytowych.
 

Sukces Shermana był natychmiastowy. Zaczął pojawiać się regularnie w telewizji, występował jako gwiazda w Carnegie Hall. Kolejne duże płyty My Son, The Celebrity i My Son, The Nut także zostały przyjęte bardzo ciepło. Na drugiej z nich znalazł się m.in. utwór "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp)" (przeróbka kompozycji "Dance Of The Hours" Ponchielliego), który wydany na singlu zawędrował na drugą pozycję notowań.
 

Od 1964 r. popularność Shermana zaczęła się zmniejszać, chociaż nagrywał dla Wamer Brothers do 1967 r. Nadal występował w telewizyjnych show, także jako aktor, napisał kilka pełnych humoru książek, lecz nigdy już nie udało mu się powtórzyć oszałamiającego sukcesu sprzed lat. Zmarł w Los Angeles na skutek przedłużających się problemów z oddychaniem, spowodowanych nadmierną otyłością.

Chase & Status

Londyński duet drum'n'bass'owy - Chase & Status wreszcie dorobił się swojego pierwszego w historii, studyjnego longplay'a. Autorski album "More Than A Lot" pojawi się za niespełna tydzień nakładem wytwórni Ram Records. Zadowoli on nie tylko fanów łamiących się rytmów.
Nie ma to jak przyjaźń przeniesiona do zawodowego wymiaru. Tak jest w tym wypadku - wytworu dwóch kumpli: Saul'a Milton'a (Chase) oraz Will'a Kennard'a (Status). Działają oni na scenie drum'n'bass od ponad pięciu lat. Mimo, że duet Chase & Status został doceniony przez Bingo Beats oraz Barcode Records (stworzyli kilka EPek dla tych oficyn), to tak naprawdę punktem przełomowym było nagranie utworu "Duppy Man" dla Breakbeat Kaos w 2005 roku. Ale to był wstęp do muzycznego sukcesu. Bo swoje preludium miało ono w zeszłym roku, kiedy Saul i Will dołączyli do rodziny wytwórni Ram Records.
To właśnie dla oficyny Andy C (dla której nagrywają także Sub Focus, Moving Fusion) duet Milton-Kennard nagrywali oczekiwany przez wiele lat studyjny album. Efektem tego już niedługo okaże się płyta "More Than A Lot" o trzynastu obliczach, bo akurat tyle będzie zawierać utworów. Część z nich jest bardzo dobrze znana fanom drum'n'bassu jak np. zeszłoroczny przebój duetu Chase & Status "Hurt You". Nie zabraknie również na tym longplayu ragga'owych wpływów w postaci numeru "Streetlife" (stworzonego z Takurą na majku) oraz ostrych jak brzytwa "Is It Worth It" i "Smash TV".
Jak wiadomo od kilku lat Londyn jest pępkiem brytyjskiej sceny muzyki miejskiej. A że z tego miasta wywodzą się Will i Saul, nie zabraknie się na ich "More Than A Lot" nieco takiego brzmienia. Czy to hiphopowego "Against All Odds" (w kooperacji z nawijaczem Kano), czy dubstepowe torpedy: "Running" i "Eastern Jam". Ostatni z wymienionych zapowiada się na wielkie zwieńczenie tego pracowitego roku wspomnianych kumpli. Orientalny glitch transformujący się w złowieszcze zakamarki dubstepu mocno poruszył Youngsta oraz Skream'a. A to oznacza jedno - wokół albumu Chase & Status będą krążyli różnej maści dubstepowi agenci.
Longplay "More Than A Lot" pojawi się 13 października nakładem oficyny Ram Records. Z wyselekcjonowanymi utworami z tego albumu można zapoznać się na Myspace: duetu Chase & Status oraz samego wydawcy. Ponadto w sieci pojawił się teledysk do nagrania "Pieces" (z gościnnym występem gitarzysty i rapera w jednej osobie - Plan B), który zwiastuje długogrający krążek tego londyńskiego projektu.

When in Rome

When in Rome to angielska  grupa nowofalowa, która początkowo składała się z wokalistów Clive Farringtona i Andrewa Manna i klawiszowca Michaela Floreale. Są najlepiej znani z singlowego przeboju z 1988 roku   "The Promise".

Michael Floreale i Andy O'Connell zostali zatrudnieni przez Clive'a Farringtona ,by zastąpić członków jego manchesterskiej grupy   Beau Leisure.  Floreale i Farrington zaczęli pisać piosenki razem. Później Farrington i Floreale poznali Andrewa Manna, beatowego poetę , i  dołączyli go do swoich występów.  O'Connell opuścił grupę; pozostałe trio nagrało kilka demówek - niektóre z udziałem przyjaciółki Manna, Corinne Drewery -. szukając wytwórni dla swych nagrań.

Grupa  podpisała kontrakt z wytwórnią Virgin UK spółki zależnej 10 Records. Producenci Ben Rogan (który pracował z Sade) i Richard James Burgess wyrazili szczególne zainteresowanie piosenką "The Promise", wydaną najpierw jako 12" dance disc. Kiedy piosenka stała się popularna, trafiając na szczyt listy Billboard Dance Club Play, Virgin zdecydowała się na album.
Zremiksowana wersja "The Promise" była pierwszym singlem z ich debiutanckiego albumu. Odniósł natychmiastowy sukces, niewiele ustępując dziesięciu najlepszym singlom w Stanach Zjednoczonych, osiągając   nr 11.Miesiąc  później cała trójka osiągnęła dolne rejony Billboard Pop Chart po raz ostatni z "Heaven Knows" (nr 95, 1990). Inne single niewiele zdziałały na listach przebojów, a grupa ostatecznie znikła.

W 1990 roku zespół rozpadł się z powodu różnic muzycznych Floreale przeniósł się do Stanów Zjednoczonych, a obecnie mieszka w Dallas, w Teksasie, gdzie komponuje muzykę dla telewizji i filmu. W 2006r Floreale zreformował When in Rome,  z wokalistą i autorem piosenek Johnem Ceravolo. Od tego czasu grupa koncertowała w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Ameryce Południowej z różnymi innymi grupami lat 80-tych.

Brother Beyond

Brother Beyond był brytyjskim boysbandandem, który miał mainstreamowy sukces w latach 80-tych.
Pierwsze cztery single grupy, "I Should Have Lied", "How Many Times", "Chain-Gang Smile"(wyprodukowany przez Dona Was z  Was Not Was),i wczesna wersja "Can You Keep a Secret?" (który później został zremiksowany i trafił na listy przebojów), zostały napisane przez członków zespołu Ega White (wtedy zastępujący  perkusistę Steve Alexandera), czy David Ben White we współpracy z Carlem Fyshem i wykonywany wspólnie przez zespół,  prowadzony przez wokalistę Nathana Moore (choć nigdy nie brał udziału w procesie komponowania żadnej z piosenek, ani nie grał na żadnym z instrumentów). Żaden z tych wczesnych singli, wydanych między 1986 i 1988 rokiem, w Wielkiej Brytanii nie znalazł się w Top 50, ale miał niewielkie sukcesy  w UK Top 75 Singles Chart.
Kiedy kompozytorzy i producenci Mike Stock, Matt Aitken i Pete Waterman, znani jako Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), zaproponowali swoje usługi zespołowi wytwórnia EMI chętnie podjęła wyzwanie.
 Pierwszą piosenką wydaną z tej sesji była "The Harder I Try", hit numer 2 , który ustępował tylko singlowi o milionowej sprzedaży "Groovy Kind of Love" autorstwa Phila Collinsa w lipcu 1988 roku. Na " Harder I Try " znajdują się sample perkusji z utworu The Isley Brothers" "This Old Heart of Mine", utwór ma feeling nurtu Motown , podobnie jak jego następca "He Ain't No Competition", który doszedł do pozycji 6. 12 calowa wersja wersja tego ostatniego utworu znalazła się na szczycie list Hi-NRG   w październiku 1988 roku, gdzie   został strącony przez  cover" I Only Wanna Be With You "w wykonaniu Samanthy Fox, ponownie wyprodukowany przez SAW.
Następne single z albumu Get Nawet nie podbiły UK Top Ten: "Be My Twin", doszedł do pozycji numer 14, a "Can You Keep a Secret?", został numerem 22. Wszystkie te single zostały zaczerpnięte z dwóch różnych edycji ich pierwszego albumu Get Even.
Po krótkiej przerwie, wrócili z  nowym singlem, "Drive On",który nie spełnił  wszystkich oczekiwań i zadebiutował jako  # 39, który utrudnił sukces na listach bestsellerów albumowi,Trust. Następnie wydała cover ballady przez The Three Degrees,  "When Will I See You Again?". Jednak nie zawojował UK Top 40    debiutując jako # 43. Finałowym singlem z ich drugiej płyty był utwór tytułowy "Trust", całkowicie samodzielnie napisany, niestety bez większych sukcesów na listach przebojów,osiągając  53 pozycję.
Po trwającej rok przerwie zespół odniósł trochę więcej sukcesów w Stanach Zjednoczonych ze swoim ostatnim singlem , "The Girl I Used to Know",który ostatecznie w W.Brytanii został numerem 48.Następnemu singlowi "Just A Heartbeat Away ", nie udało się trafić na listy przebojów.
Wydali w rzeczywistości tylko dwa albumy,  Get Even w 1988 roku, i Trust w 1989 roku, przed rozpadem w 1991 roku .
