Fatback Band

Fatback Band (później, po prostu Fatback) – amerykańska grupa funkowa i disco. Popularna zwłaszcza w latach siedemdziesiątych i osiemdziesiątych, The Fatback Band jest najbardziej znany ze swoich przebojów w Top 10 Billboard R&B; Chart, "(Do The) Spanish Hustle","I Like Girls","Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)", i " Backstrokin ". Ich singiel z 1979r "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" jest uznawany za pierwszy hip-hopowy singiel.
Założony w Nowym Jorku w 1970r, The Fatback Band był pomysłem Billa Curtisa, doświadczonego perkusisty sesyjnego , zainspirowanego scalaniem jazzowego beatu z Nowego Orleanu w funkowy zespół. Oprócz Curtisa początkowy skład zespołu stanowili gitarzysta Johnny King, basista Johnny Flippin, trębacz George Williams, saksofonista Earl Shelton, flecista George Adams i klawiszowiec Gerry Thomas. Zespół specjalizował się w graniu "street funk". W grupie póżniej pojawili się grający na kongach Wayne Woolford, wokalisci Jayne i Gerry, Deborah Cooper saksofonista Fred Demerey, i gitarzyści Louis Wright i George Victory.
Zespół Fatback podpisał kontrakt nagraniowy z Perception Records i wylansował letni hit "Street Dance". Singiel osiągnął Top 30 na US Billboard R&B;, ale nie udało się mu wejść na listy pop, zresztą do końca swojej kariery. Zespół wydał albumy Let's Do It Again, People Music i Feel My Soul przed podpisaniem kontraktu z wytwórnią Even Records w 1974 roku.
W połowie lat 70-tych , zespół wyłączył elementy jazzowe i zwrócił się bardziej ku dyskotekowemu brzmieniu na singlach, "Keep On Steppin'","Yum, Yum (Give Me Some)", i "(Are You Ready) Bus Stop". Single były popularne w klubach tanecznych, ale nie pojawiały się na listach R&B; aż do wiosny 1976, gdy "(Do The) Spanish Hustle" zamykał pierwszą dziesiątkę wspomnianego zestawienia.
Grupa kontynuowała działalność singlami dla Spring/Polydor, "Party Time", "The Booty" i "Double Dutch". Pod koniec 1977r zdecydowano zmienić nazwę na Fatback, a w 1978 roku umieścili swój pierwszy singiel w Top10: "I Like Girls". Utwór "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" często jest uważana za pierwszy singel rapowy, wydany tydzień wcześniej przed "Rapper's Delight" grupy The Sugarhill Gang w październiku 1979.
W 1980 roku Fatback miał parę swoich największych hitów z "Gotta Get My Hands On Some (Money)" i " Backstrokin". Także wprowadził na listy przebojów w latach osiemdziesiątych "Take It Any Way You Can't It", "I Found Lovin'" i "Spread Love", z wokalistką Evelyn Thomas, w 1985 roku. O ile amerykański sukces był częściowy,to zespół regularnie plasował swoje single na UK Chart Singles w Wielkiej Brytanii.
Klawiszowiec Gerry Thomas równocześnie był członkiem The Jimmy Castor Bunch, więc zespół wybierał trasy wokół obszaru Nowego Jorku. Odnieśli znaczny sukces w Ameryce Południowej, zwłaszcza w Brazylii (z "Money", i "Backstrokin'").
