Miejsce odchodzącego Atkinsa zajął dotychczasowy perkusista grupy towarzyszącej The Blue Notes, Theodore "Teddy" Pendergrass, a piątym wokalistą został Lloyd Parkes. Muzycy podpisali kontrakt z producentami Gamblem i Huffem, których wycyzelowane aranżacje i pełne niepokoju rytmy doskonale podkreślały partie wokalne Pendergrassa. Ten z kolei sięgnął szczytów w pełnej bólu nastrojowej balladzie "If You Don't Know Me By Now" (z 1972 r.), opowiadającej o zawiłościach związku dwojga ludzi.
Kolejne single, m.in. "The Love I Lost" (z 1973 r.) i "Where Are All My Friends" (z 1974 r.) umocniły pozycję Teddy'ego, który zaczął domagać się równych praw w zespole.
Melvin And The Blue Notes z nowym wokalistą Davidem Ebo przenieśli się do ABC Records. Mimo umieszczenia utworu "Don't Leave Me This Way" w Top 5 amerykańskiej listy przebojów i "Reaching For The World" w Top 10 zestawień rhythm'n'bluesowych w 1977 r. muzycy nie byli w stanie powtórzyć wcześniejszych sukcesów. Na początku lat 80. pozostali bez kontraktu nagraniowego, nadal jednak z powodzeniem koncertowali.
