Trio działające w Nowym Jorku w składzie: Donald McPherson (ur. 9.07.1941 r., zm. 4.07. 1971 r.), Luther Simmons Jnr. (ur. 9.09.1942 r.) i Tony Sylvester (ur. 7.10.1941 r. w Panamie).Zadebiutowali w 1965 r. jako jedna z wielu grup noszących nazwę The Poets. Szybko postanowili ją jednak zmienić na Main Ingredient i podpisać kontrakt z producentem Bertem DeCoteaux, którego bogate aranżacje stały się doskonałym tłem dla dopracowanych w każdym szczególe harmonii wokalnych zespołu. Można to było dostrzec zwłaszcza na wczesnych singlach grupy, takich jak: "I'm So Proud" (z 1970 r.), "Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling In Love)" i "Black Seeds Keep On Growing" (oba z 1971 r.).
W 1971 r. McPherson zmarł na białaczkę i to już jego następca, Cuba Gooding, zaśpiewał w superbestsellerowym nagraniu "Everybody Plays The Fool". Mimo że Ingredient odnosili dalsze sukcesy komercyjne, ich nagrania stawały się stopniowo coraz bardziej jednostajne i brakowało im dynamiki wcześniejszych propozycji.
W 1977 r. po podpisaniu kontraktu z Motown, Gooding rozpoczął karierę solową, lecz w 1979 r. ponownie połączył siły z Sylvestrem i Simmonsem, nagrywając pod szyldem Main Ingredient także i w latach 80-tych.
