Chris De Burgh

Właśc. Christopher Davidson, ur. 15.10.1948 w Argentynie. DeBurgh jest synem brytyjskiego dyplomaty. Piosenki popowe zaczął pisać podczas studiów w Trinity College w Dublinie. Po podpisaniu kontraktu nagraniowego z wytwórnią A&M; Records został wytypowany do występów przed koncertami grupy Supertramp, która w owym czasie (1975) odnosiła wielkie sukcesy.

Na jego debiutanckim albumie Far Beyond These Castle Walls dawały się zauważyć silne wpływy Moody Blues z okresu "kosmicznego", choć krytycy uznali lekkie, rockowe, fantastyczne opowieści DeBurgha za nieco ekscentryczne. Wzięty z tego albumu singel "Flying" słabo sprzedawał się w Wielkiej Brytanii, ale w Brazylii wszedł na 1. miejsce list przebojów. Kolejny album, Spanish Train And Other Stories, również nie sprzedawał się najlepiej, ale jeden utwór, chwytliwy "A Spaceman Came Travelling", spodobał się brytyjskim DJ radiowym i stał się chyba "dożywotnio" przebojem okresu przedświątecznego.

Choć DeBurgh nie zdołał wybić się na rynku brytyjskim i amerykańskim, odnosił spore sukcesy w Kanadzie, RPA, Europie i Ameryce Południowej. Jego piąty album, Eastern Wind, sprzedawał się w Norwegii lepiej niż Let It Be Beatlesów i wszedł na sam szczyt tamtejszych list najlepiej sprzedających się płyt. W końcu nastąpił długo oczekiwany przełom wyprodukowany przez Ruperta Hine'a piąty album DeBurgha The Getaway z zaraźliwym przebojem "Don't Pay Ferryman" odniósł sukces w Wielkiej Brytanii. Najlepiej do tego momentu przyjęty album DeBurgha pochodził z 1984 był to Man On The Line z utworem "High On Emotion", który również odniósł pewne sukcesy na listach singli.

Ale dopiero dzięki kompilacji The Very Best Of wydanej w roku następnym DeBurgh stał się gwiazdą w Wielkiej Brytanii. Po jedenastu latach koncertów i wydaniu ponad dwudziestu singli DeBurgh w końcu wdrapał się na szczyt brytyjskiej listy przebojów w 1986 z nieodparcie romantycznym utworem "Lady In Red". Singel ten stał się zresztą przebojem na całym świecie i ugruntował pozycję DeBurgha jako gwiazdy.

Zaczęły się nareszcie sprzedawać starsze płyty z jego repertuaru - i to głównie za sprawą nowego pokolenia odbiorców. "A Spaceman Came Travelling" w 1987 w końcu dostał się na brytyjskie listy przebojów. DeBurgh nie utracił zdolności do pisania "idealnych" piosenek popowych, co udowodnił zaraźliwym "Missing You" z 1988, który prawie osiągnął 1. miejsce list brytyjskich. Album Into The Light stanowił kolejny krok w łatwiejszym teraz marszu ku bestsellerom.

Najlepiej sprzedającym się jak dotąd albumem DeBurgha był Flying Colours, który dotarł do 1. miejsca list brytyjskich w 1988r. W 1991, po zakończeniu wojny w Zatoce, DeBurgh przekazał całe wpływy ze sprzedaży singla "The Simple Truth" na rzecz uchodźców kurdyjskich. Płyta Power Of Ten z 1992 "trzymała normę". Trzeba zresztą gratulować DeBurghowi konsekwencji, ponieważ nie zmienia on kierunku artystycznego wraz z mijającą modą w celu osiągnięcia jak najlepszych efektów komercyjnych. Jak sam to ujął w liście do prezesa wytwórni A&M; Records: "Życie nie skończyło się wraz z pojawieniem się Sex Pistols".

W 1995 wokalista stał się bohaterem skandalu - miał krótki romans z nianią swoich dzieci. Prasa spekulowała, że mogła to być owa słynna "kobieta w czerwieni" ("Lady In Red"). Kilka miesięcy później DeBurgh znów znalazł się w czołówkach gazet, kiedy przyznał, że w istocie piosenka ta wcale nie opowiadała o jego żonie. Pod koniec tego niespokojnego roku wydał Beautiful Years, album nagrany na żywo z towarzyszeniem orkiestry. Na krążku tym przypominał swoje muzyczne korzenie, wyko­ nując własne wersje utworów z repertuaru Elvisa Presleya, The Beatles i Roya Orbisona.
