Syn Szkota i Angielki.
W tym samym roku został drugim wokalistą podobnej stylistycznie grupy Long John Baldry's Hoochie Coochie Men oraz zadebiutował jako solista singlem Good Morning Little School Girl (Decca).
Od 1965 wykonywał przeboje soulowe z zespołem Briana AUGERA - Steampacket. Usunięty z niego zabiegał bezskutecznie o miejsce w grupie Manfreda MANNA.
Przez kilka miesięcy śpiewał z bluesrockowym Shotgun Express.
Pierwszy sukces odniósł w 1967 jako wokalista The Jeff BECK Group. Skłócony z liderem odszedł w 1969 (w połowie lat osiemdziesiątych odnowili współpracę razem nagrali m.in. piosenkę Infatuation oraz znany utwór Curtisa MAYFIELDA People Get Ready).
Od 1969 do 1975 z powodzeniem występował w zespole The FACES. W nagraniach sygnowanych nazwiskiem dochował wierności wszystkim zainteresowaniom i fascynacjom muzycznym, jakie objawił w okresie debiutu. Charakterystycznym "zniszczonym" głosem, z wielką emocjonalnością śpiewał zarówno utwory soulowe, rhythm'n'bluesowe oraz rock'n'rollowe, jak i ballady folkowe.
Wśród wielu ekscytujących przebojów muzyki soul, jakie zarejestrował między 1969 a 1975, dominowały kompozycje Sama COOKE'A, np. Twistin' The Night Away, Bring It On Home To Me \ You Send Me, ale znalazły się też m.in. Natural Woman z repertuaru Arethy FRANKLIN i It's All Over Now Bobby'ego WOMACKA.
Przedstawił hałaśliwe wersje kilku standardów rock'n'rollowych, np. Sweet Little Rock'n'Roller Chucka BERRY'EGO i The Girl Can't Help It LITTLE RICHARDA.
Z tkliwością w głosie wykonywał ballady Boba DYLANA (Only A Hobo. Tomorrow Is Such A Long Time, Girl Of The North Country) i Tima HARDINA (Reason To Believe) oraz nastrojowe piosenki własne i towarzyszących mu muzyków, np. gitarzysty Martina Quittentona (Maggie May, You Wear It Well, Mandolin Wind, Farewell).
Steve Cropper - g, Jesse Ed Davis - g, Donald "Duck" Dunn - b. Lee Sklar - b i Al Johnson - dr.
Pierwszą stronę albumu wypełniły dynamiczne utwory o zdecydowanie rockowym charakterze (m. in. Stone Cold Sober - owoc współpracy kompozytorskiej z Cropperem), drugą - piosenki pełne spokoju i ciepła (np. / Don't Want To Talk About It Danny'ego Whittena, This Old Heart Of Mine z repertuaru The ISLEY BROTHERS, Sailing Sutherland Brothers And Quiver).
Better Off Dead, G i' Me Wings, She Won't Dance With Me, Tora Tora Tora Out With The Boys, Jealous. Dancin' Alone) oraz piosenek pełnych liryzmu i melancholii (np. Tonight's The Night. Say It Ain't True, Sonny. Satisfied, Every Beat Of My Heart, My Heart Can't Tell Me No). Z dobrą znajomością upodobań słuchaczy dobierał znane przeboje (np. Try A Little Tenderness Otisa REDDINGA, You Keep Me Hangin' On The SUPREMES. Just Like A Woman Boba Dylana, Get Back i In My Life The BEATLES, How Long Ace, The First Cut Is The Deepest Cata Stevensa, Downtown Train Toma WAITSA, , Have I Told You Lately Van Morrisona ).
Skłaniał się ku nowocześnie zaaranżowanej muzyce dyskotekowej (np. Do ya think I'm Sexy?, Tonight I'm Yours. Young Turk, Baby Jane, Ghetto Blaster. ^ . Niektórym piosenkom nadał charakter autobiograficzny (np. All In The Name Of Rock'n'Roll, Stone Cold Sober, Only a boy, The Wild Horse).
Niezwykłą balladę Never Give Up On A Dream napisał poruszony doświadczeniami śmiertelnie chorego na raka Kanadyjczyka Terrence'a Stanleya Foxa, który do same końca zmagał się z cierpieniem własnym i innych. We wstrząsającej piosence The Killing Of Georgie opowiedział o przeżyciach homoseksualisty, napiętnowanego przez otoczenie, a wreszcie zamordowanego przez nieznanych sprawców.
Dyskografię uzupełniają m.in. trzy wspólne na grania z australijską grupą Python Lee Jackson In A Broken Dream, Doin' Fine , The Blues na _ płycie "In A Broken Dream" (GNP Crescenda 1972)
oraz liczne amerykańskie wybory nagrań z lat 1964-1966, np. "A Shot Of Rhythm'n'Blues" (Private Stock. 1976), "Rod Stewart And Steampacket" (Springboard. 1976). "Rod The mod".
