Niepowodzenie wczesnych singli "Nothing You Can Do" i "I Found A True Love" oraz rozpad The Valentinos zmusiły Womacka do zatrudnienia się w roli muzyka sesyjnego w należącym do Chipsa Momana American Recording Studio. Najciekawszym dokonaniem tego okresu była współpraca z Wilsonem Pickettem.Womack był autorem jego siedemnastu przebojów, m.in. "I'm In Love" i "I'm A Midnight Mover".
Działalność solową wznowił nagraniami dla wytwórni Keymen, Atlantic i Minit. Rhythm'n'bluesowymi szlagierami stały się tematy "It's Gonna Rain", "How I Miss You Baby" (oba z 1969 r.) i "More Than I Can Stand" (z 1970 r.). Pierwszy album The Womack Live,
był dość szablonową płytą, jednak stopniowo muzyk zaczął wzbogacać
repertuar o bardziej autorskie pomysły, w czym spory udział miał Sly Stone, któremu gitarzysta towarzyszył na longplayu A Riot Going On z 1971 r. Wpływ Stone'a dominował w tytułowym temacie z albumu Commimication, pierwszego ze zrealizowanych dla wytwórni United Artists.
Potwierdzeniem dojrzałości artysty był kolejny longplay Understanding, a także pochodzące z obu płyt rhythm'n'bluesowe singlowe przeboje "That's The Way I Feel About Cha". "Woman's Gotta Have It" i "Harry Hippie". Albumy Facts Of Life, Looking For A Love Again i I Don 't Know What The World Is Coming To łączyły tradycyjnie utwory autorskie z wersjami standardów innych wykonawców. Współpracę z United Artists zamknęła płyta Bobby Womack Goes Country And Western.
Późniejsze nagrania dla CBS i Aristy nic odbiegały stylistycznie od poprzednich. W 1981 r. piosenkarz podpisał kontrakt z małą niezależną wytwórnią Beverly Glen, dla której nagrał długogrającą płytę The Poet. Pochodzący z niej singel "If You Think You're Lonely Now" trafił znów na listy rhythm'n"bluesowych bestsellerów. Na albumie The Poet II z 1984 r. Womack wykonywał część utworów w duecie z Patti LaBelle ("Love Has Finally Come At Last").
W 1985 r. muzyk przeniósł się do MCA, debiutując w nowej wytwórni longplayem So Many Rivers. Długoletnią przyjaźń z The Rolling Stones (Womack był autorem ich pierwszego wielkiego przeboju "It's All Over Now" z 1964 r.) podkreślał udział piosenkarza w ich nowej wersji tematu "Harlem Shuffle".
Muzyk określający siebie mianem "ostatniego wokalisty soulowego" należy
z pewnością do najciekawszych wykonawców ekspresyjnej i emocjonalnej
czarnej muzyki.
