Jego pierwsza kompozycja Riverboat Shuffle została nagrana w 1924r przez ulubionego muzyka Carmichaela, trębacza Bixa Beiderbecke, i szybko stała się standardem dixielandowym, W 1927 po nagraniu z P. Whitemanem własnego utworu Washboard Blues
przerwał studia i poświęcił się całkowicie muzyce jazzowej. Pod koniec
lat 20-tych występował jako pianista, rzadziej trębacz, z własnym zespołem,
jednak z biegiem czasu zdobywał uznanie przede wszystkim jako uzdolniony
kompozytor.
Do najważniejszych kompozycji Carmichaela należą takie standardy, jak: Stardust,
Georgia on My Mind, Up the Lazy River, Rockin' Chair, The Hearness of
You, Skylark, New Orleans, Heart and Soul oraz In the Cool, Cool, Cool
of Evening, za którą w 1951 został nagrodzony Oscarem. Współpracował
z Louisem Armstrongiem, który umieścił jego utwory na swoich 27
płytach oraz z Jackiem Teagardenem, Joe Venutim, Tommym i Jimmym
Dorseyami, Lonnie Johnsonem i wieloma innymi czołowymi jazzmanami lat
30. i 40-tych.
W 1935r, podczas pracy w Hollywood, został przypadkowo zaangażowany do
filmu w roli śpiewającego pianisty. Postaci charakterystyczne zagrał
jeszcze w 14 filmach, m.in. w To Haue and Haue Not I The Best Years of Our Lives.
W latach 40-tych występował i nagrywał z trio, natomiast w 1956
zarejestrował - jako wokalista - sesję nagraniową z towarzyszeniem
modern jazzowego zespołu Arta Peppera. Pod koniec lat 50-tych, zdegustowany
zmianami w muzyce popularnej, zakończył karierę. Opublikował dwie
wartościowe autobiografie: The Stardust Road (1946) i Sometimes I Wonder (1965).
