Gordon urodził się w Warszawie , wówczas jako część Imperium Rosyjskiego i jako dziecko przeprowadził się do Nowego Jorku. Występował jako wodewilowy aktor i piosenkarz na przełomie lat 20. i 30-tych XX wieku, ale jego talent do pisania piosenek był zawsze najważniejszy.
