W 1927 przeniósł się do Dallas w Teksasie, gdzie dołączył do zespołu Terrence'a Holdera, Dark Clouds Of Joy. W tym okresie Kirk grał najczęściej na tubie, sięgając także po saksofony barytonowy i basowy; w 1927 objął stanowisko lidera zespołu (znanego jako Andy Kirk And His Clouds Of Joy). Dzięki rekomendacji George'a E. Lee zespół zaangażowano do prestiżowej PlaMor Restaurant w Kansas City. W czasie pracy w tym klubie przygotowano także kontrakt nagraniowy; do tego projektu Kirk zatrudnił Mary Lou Williams. Williams nie tylko wzięła udział w nagraniu, ale także dostarczyła kilku aranżacji, co więcej - niektóre z nich były zarazem jej kompozycjami. Pianistka odtąd brała udział we wszystkich sesjach, szybko zyskując pozycję jednej z najważniejszych i najbardziej wpływowych pianistek jazzu.
Obsada zespołu niewiele się zmieniła przez lata, chociaż przewinęło się przezeń wielu doskonałych muzyków, jak Buddy Tate, Edgar Battle, Claude Williams, Ben Thigpen, Pha Terrel i John Williams. Łagodnie swingujący zespół zebrał w swym repertuarze wszystko, co najlepsze w skomercjalizowanym brzmieniu jazzu w Kansas City. Na początku 1931 zespół przechodził poważny kryzys; ale dzięki profesjonalnym partyturom Mary Lou Williams, perfekcji muzyków i ciekawej, nowatorskiej stylistyce przetrwał do lat 40-tych. Mary Lou Williams odeszła z zespołu w 1942, aby zająć się własną karierą. Obok Williams wybijającym się solista był również saksofonista tenorowy Dick Wilson. Rozporządzał dźwiękiem jasnym, przypominającym brzmieniem styl gry Lestera Younga.
Nie tracąc z pola widzenia ogromnych talentów Williams i Wilsona, należy dodać, że przez wiele lat największym uznaniem u publiczności niejazzowej cieszył się także wokalista Pha Terrell.
Dysponował aksamitnym tenorem i chociaż jazzowy feeling był dla niego czymś nienaturalnym, nagrał kilka wspaniałych przebojów (z największym "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" na czele). Jednak już w 1948 Clouds Of Joy, jeden z niewielu big-bandów, którym udało się zyskać popularność i uznanie w całych Stanach, uległ rozwiązaniu. Kirk grywał jeszcze tu i ówdzie, w końcu jednak odszedł od muzyki, pojawiając się okazjonalnie na estradzie jeszcze w latach 70-tych.
