Spandau Ballet

Zespół brytyjski. Utworzony w 1976r w Londynie; z początku (przez trzy lata) występował pod nazwą The Makers. W jego składzie znaleźli się: Tony Hadley (2.06.1959r, Londyn) - voc, Gary Kemp (1 6.10.1960r, Londyn) - g, k, voc, Steve Norman (25.03.1960r, Londyn) - s, perc, voc, Richard Miller - b i John Keeble (6.07.1959r, Londyn) - dr, voc; Millera zastąpił niebawem Martin Kemp (10.10.1961r, Londyn) - b, voc.

Spandau Ballet, podobnie jak VISAGE czy DURAN DURAN, szybko wykorzystał pierwsze objawy przesycenia punk rockiem. Poszarpanym skórzanym kurtkom przeciwstawił jedwabie i brokaty, a muzyce hałaśliwej i brutalnej - melodyjne piosenki w tradycyjnym stylu, pulsujące jednak komputerowym rytmem instrumentów elektronicznych (np. To Cut A Long Story Short i The Freeze).

Do udziału w popularnych nagraniach z początku lat osiemdziesiątych zapraszał niekiedy sekcje instrumentów dętych mniej znanych grup murzyńskich - Beggar And Co. (Glow) oraz Light Of The World (Chant No. 1: Don't Need This Pressure On). Później z nie słabnącym powodzeniem wykonywał błahy repertuar rozrywkowy, niekiedy o soulowym odcieniu (np. piosenka True, dedykowana Marvinowi GAYE'OWI, oraz Instinction, Lifeline, Communication, Gold, Only When You Leave, I'll Fly For You, Highly Strung, Round And Round, Fight For Ourselves, Through The Barricades, Be Free With Your Love).

Martin i Gary Kempowie zagrali słynnych gangsterów Ronniego i Reggiego Krayów w filmie The Krays (1990, reż. Peter Medak). Wiosną 1991 Gary gościł w Polsce; wystąpił w filmie Krzysztofa Langa Papierowe małżeństwo.
