Kalmar, pochodzący z Nowego Jorku , rzucił szkołę w młodym wieku i zaczął pracować w wodewilu . Pojawił się na scenie jako iluzjonista, komik i tancerz, po czym zaczął pisać piosenki po kontuzji kolana, która zakończyła jego karierę. W tym czasie zarobił wystarczająco dużo, aby założyć wydawnictwo muzyczne Kalmar and Puck, w którym współpracował z wieloma autorami tekstów, w tym z Harrym Puckiem (1891–1964) i Harrym Rubym . Wydawnictwo działało również pod nazwą Kalmar, Puck, Abrahams, Consolidated, Inc., drugim wymienionym partnerem był Maurice Abrahams (1883–1931).

Bert Kalmar był żonaty z Jessie Brown, z którą miał dwoje dzieci. Para rozwiodła się później.
Zmarł w Los Angeles w Kalifornii i został pochowany na cmentarzu Forest Lawn w Glendale w Kalifornii .
