Pierwszych nagrań dokonał jako szesnastolatek dla wytwórni King Records. Temat "Mine And Mine Alone", trawestacja arii "Softly Awakes My Heart" z opery Camille'a Saint-Saensa "Samson i Dalila". ujawnił zadziwiająco dojrzały głos i styl wokalny chłopca. Z czasem Lawrence wypracował charakterystyczne mocne i ciepłe brzmienie, zainspirowane śpiewem Franka Sinatry, lecz dalekie od dosłownego naśladownictwa. Sławę przyniosły mu występy w telewizyjnym programie Steve'a Allena "Tonight", podczas których poznał swoją partnerkę i przyszłą żonę, Eydie Gorme.
Podczas służby wojskowej (1958-1960) śpiewał na imprezach popularyzujących amerykańskie siły zbrojne wśród potencjalnych poborowych. Powróciwszy do cywila, stworzył wraz z Eydie małżeński duet popularny dzięki nagrywanym dla CBS, ABC i United Artists albumom: Steve And Eydie At The Movies, On Broadway, We Got Us, The Golden Hits i Our Love Is Here To Stay. Ostatni z nich, podwójne wydawnictwo ze słynnymi tematami George'a Gershwina, został wykorzystany jako podkład muzyczny w popularnym, telewizyjnym programie.
Jako solista Lawrence w latach 1961-1962 na listy przebojów single "Portrait Of My Love" i "Go Away Little Girl" oraz albumy Academy Award Losers i Portrait Of My love. Występował w musicalach "What Makes Sammy Run?" (wersja broadwayowska) i "Pal Joey" (główna rola w posezonowej obsadzie) oraz w telewizyjnych serialach kryminalnych.
