Patrice Rushen

Ur. 30.09.1954 r. w Los Angeles w stanie Kalifornia. Wychowana w Los Angeles, studiowała na Uniwersytecie Południowej Kalifornii. Na fortepianie uczyła się grać od trzeciego roku życia, a jako nastolatka zainteresowała się jazzem. W 1972 r. zdobyła zespołową nagrodę na festiwalu młodych talentów w Monterey. Akompaniowała wybitnym muzykom jazzowym (m.in. Abbey Lincoln, Donaldowi Byrdowi i Sonny’emu Rollinsowi).

W 1977 r. zadebiutowała jako wokalistka w zespole gitarzysty Lee Ritenoura. W jej wczesnym repertuarze dominowało połączenie popu i soulu typowe dla artystów związanych z wytwórnią Elektra. Singel „Hang It Up” trafił w 1978 r. do amerykańskiej Top 20 przebojów rhythm’n’bluesowych, zaś nagrany rok później temat „Haven’t You Heard” dotarł do siódmego miejsca w kategorii pop. Podobnie jak następny, „Never Gonna Give You Up (Won’t Let You Be)”, singel zdobył też umiarkowaną popularność w Wielkiej Brytanii, jednak prawdziwym sukcesem okazał się tam utwór „Forget Me Nots”.

Choć późniejsze brytyjskie nagrania ustępowały powodzeniem przebojowi, artystce udało się zdobyć sporą popularność w USA w kręgach soulu i rhythm’n’bluesa. Single „Feel So Real (Won’t
Let Go)” i „Watch Out” gościły na trzeciej i siódmej pozycji tamtejszych list w 1984 i 1987 r. Zmiana wytwórni na Arista Records przyniosła wzrost zainteresowania wokalizą Rushen, która jako pianistka przeszła z czasem od bopu do muzyki fusion. W 1988 r. występowała we wspólnej formacji Wayne’a Shortera i Carlosa Santany.
