Style Council

Duet założony w 1983 przez Paula Wellera (ur. 25.05.1958r w Woking w hr. Surrey, Anglia) i Micka Talbota (ur. 11.09. 1958r). Weller był głównym wokalistą Jam, a Talbot grał na instrumentach klawiszowych w Merton Parkas i Bureau. Z zespołem współpracowała też pieśniarka D.C. Lee poślubiona później przez Wellera łączącego fascynacje soulem ze społecznymi zainteresowaniami. Jego idolem był Curtis Mayfield, który wystąpił na albumie grupy z 1987.

Pierwsze przeboje wypłynęły na fali popularności Jam (czwórka Paris, single „SpeakA Child” i „Long Hot Summer”). Na pierwszym albumie zespołu wystąpiła gościnnie Tracey Thorn z Everything But The Girl. Najciekawszym muzycznie dokonaniem grupy był singel „My Ever Changing Moods”, a najbardziej upolitycznionym „Soul Deep” nagrany w połowie lat 80-tych z Jimmym Ruffinem i Junior Giscombem pod firmą Council Collective. Celem przedsięwzięcia było zebranie funduszy dla rodzin strajkujących górników, a Weller zaangażował się równolegle w ruch Red Wedge popierający aktywnie Partię Pracy.

W 1985r Style Council wystąpili na koncercie Live Aid, a rok później nakręcili krótki film „JerUSAIem", zjadliwą satyrę na przemysł muzyczny. Popularnością cieszyły się również późniejsze single „The Walls Come Tumbling Down”, „Have You Ever Had It Blue” (z filmu „Absolute Beginners”) i „Wanted”. Album Confession Of A Pop Group z 1988r został przyjęty chłodniej, a dwa lata później zespół zaprzestał działalności. Weller założył własną grupę Paul Weller Movement oraz wytwórnię Freedom High, w latach 90-tych działał z powodzeniem jako solista.
