Wtedy też nakłonił Greena do rozpoczęcia solowej działalności piosenkarskiej, a na jego pierwszy singel wybrał własną kompozycję "Back Up Train". Kolejne single- "I Can't Get Next To You" z bieżącego repertuaru THE TEMPTATIONS, "Tired Of Being Alone" i "Let's Stay Together" błyskawicznie zdobyły popularność w Stanach, plasując Greena w ścisłej czołówce największych czarnych gwiazd muzyki soul.
