Dzieciństwo spędzili w miejscu swych narodzin w Gary w stanie Indiana, USA, wychowywani przez ojca, gitarzystę bluesowego, Joe Jacksona. Rodzeństwo zadebiutowało w miejscowych klubach w 1962 r., funkcję zaś lidera grupy spełniał najmłodszy, uważany za cudowne dziecko, Michael. Pierwszych nagrań dokonali dla wytwórni Steeltown z Indiany.
W 1968 r. zostali przesłuchani przez przedstawicicli firmy Tamla Motown. Zarekomendował ich tam Bobby Taylor, jednak oficjalna wersja przypisuje odkrycie grupy Dianie Ross. Spółka autorska Motown znana jako Corporation (Korporacja) skomponowała serię tematów na pierwsze płyty Jacksonów, eksponujących ich młodzieńczy entuzjazm i atmosferę wokalnej zabawy.
Już pierwszy z nagranych dla Motown singli, "I Want You Back", stał się najszybciej rozchodzącą się płytą w całej historii wytwórni. Z pięciu kolejnych przebojów trzy znalazły się również na szczycie listy amerykańskiej ("ABC", "The Love You Save" i "One Bad Apple").
W 1971 r. Michael rozpoczął za radą promotorów równoległą działalność solową, a wkrótce potem w jego ślady poszli Jermaine i najstarszy z braci, Jackie. Popularność zespołu zdyskontowano poświęconym mu rysunkowym serialem "The Jackson 5" oraz programem "Goin' Back To Indiana", w którym bracia grali rolę gospodarzy.
Po rozwiązaniu Korporacji w 1971 r Jackson Five nagrywali wersje popowych i rhythm'n'blue-sowych przebojów oraz standardów innych, związanych z Motown, wykonawców. Z czasem pozwolono im sięgać po bardziej zróżnicowany repertuar, jak "Doctor My Eyes" Jacksona Browne'a.
Grupa zaczęła nagrywać własne kompozycje na początku lat siedemdziesiątych, a w ich połowie wypełniała już nimi prawie w całości swoje albumy.Szczyt popularności Jackson Five osiągnęli w Wielkiej Brytanii podczas tournee w 1972 r., jednak po powrocie do USA miejscowy rynek zareagował negatywnie na bardziej wyszukane brzmienie nowych nagrań. W 1973 r. zespół miał już za sobą "nastolatkowy" etap pierwszych przebojów. Na estradzie zabawiał po staremu, ale w studiu nagraniowym preferował ostrzejsze funkowe brzmienie.
W 1975 r. wygasł kontrakt grupy z Motown. Wyczuwając rezerwę wytwórni wobec ich nowych nagrań, Jackson Five przeszli pod skrzydła Epic Records. Jermaine, który poślubił córkę dyrektora Motown, Berry'ego Gordy'ego, porzucił grupę dla starej firmy, debiutując jako solista. W 1976 r. Gordy wytoczył zespołowi proces o zerwanie kontraktu. Sprawa, której pierwszym efektem była zmiana nazwy grupy na The Jacksons, ciągnęła się do 1980 r., kiedy to bracia zapłacili Gordy'emu 600.000 dolarów, cedując na Motown wszelkie prawa do nazwy "Jackson Five".
