Gottwald urodził się w Providence, Rhode Island . Jest pochodzenia żydowskiego . Jego ojciec, Janusz Jerzy Gottwald, był architektem urodzonym w Łasku w Polsce . Gottwald spędził większość młodości w Nowym Jorku . Początkowo chciał być perkusistą , ale jego rodzice nie chcieli zestawu perkusyjnego w domu.W wieku 13 lat wziął gitarę swojej starszej siostry i nauczył się grać.
