Billy Joel

William Martin Joel (ur. 9 maja 1949r) - amerykański wokalista, autor tekstów piosenek i pianista. . Joel, pianista o klasycznym muzycznym wykształceniu, do swojej pierwszej grupy, The Echoes, dołączył w 1964 r. Cztery lata później porzucił ją na rzecz The Hassels, popularnej formacji z Long Island, która podpisała kontrakt z United Artists. Billy zagrał na dwóch albumach zespołu, The Hassels i Hour Of The Wolf, zanim opuścił go wraz z perkusistą Jonem Smallem, by założyć grupę Attila. Duet ten nagrał jeden album, noszący zresztą nazwę grupy, zanim dwaj muzycy ruszyli własnymi drogami. 

Taśma demo z oryginalnymi nagraniami Joela przerodziła się w jego debiutancki album, Cold Spring Harbor, który nie sprzedawał się najlepiej, głównie z powodu słabej promocji. Kiedy jednak nowa piosenka, „Captain Jack", nagrana na potrzeby programu radiowego stała się undergroundowym przebojem, wytwórnia Columbia Records wytropiła Billy'ego aż w Kalifornii i podpisała z nim długoterminowy kontrakt. W 1973 r. tytułowy utwór z albumu Piano Man wszedł do Top 30 amerykańskiej listy przebojów i otworzył wokaliście drogę do pełnej sukcesów kariery.

 Joel uparcie odmawiał żądaniom szefów wytwórni, domagających się bardziej komercyjnego materiału i mimo że jego dwa następne longplaye, Street Life Serenade i Turnstiles, odniosły spory sukces, jego los odmienił się na dobre dopiero w 1977 r., gdy longplay The Stranger odebrał płycie Bridge Over Troubled Water Simona i Garfunkela tytuł bestsellera numer l wytwórni Columbia. Najbardziej znana piosenka pochodząca z tego wydawnictwa, „Just The Way You Are", zdobyła dwie nagrody Grammy: dla najlepszej piosenki i nagrania roku. Ta romantyczna ballada stała się już klasykiem, a w wykonaniu Barry'ego White'a w 1978 r. odniosła wielki sukces w Wielkiej Brytanii.

 Z wydanego w 1979 r. albumu 52nd Street pochodził następny wielki przebój, „My Life", podczas gdy pierwszy w karierze Billy'ego amerykański przebój numer l, „It's Still Rock'N'Roll To Me", znalazł się na płycie Glass Houses z 1980 r. Image wokalisty prezentujący go jako łatwą do zaakceptowania, daleką od wszelkich kontrowersji postać, został zachwiany wraz z nagraniem albumu The Nylon Curtain, na którym znalazły się dwa protest songi z prawdziwego zdarzenia, „Allentown" i „Goodnight Saigon". 

W 1984 r. Joel powrócił jednak do mniej skomplikowanych spraw rejestrując album An Innocent Man, na którym zamieszczono pamiętny przebój „Uptown Girl" (w nakręconym wideoklipie wystąpiła żona Joela, modelka Chrissie Brinkley, z którą wokalista rozstał się wiosną 1994 r.). Mimo że ostatnimi czasy Joel nagrywa jakby mniej, od czasu do czasu udaje mu się zanotować na swoim koncie przebojowy singel, który umacnia jego pozycję w świecie muzyki pop. Będąc z natury perfekcjonistą, wokalista zasygnalizował także swoje pragnienie zajęcia się nieco bardziej skomplikowaną muzyką. 

W 1991 r. Joel otrzymał doktorat honoris causa Fairfield University w stanie Connecticut. Wydany w 1993 r. album River Of Dreams okazał się kolejnym wielkim sukcesem wokalisty, plasując się na 3. miejscu brytyjskiej i 1. amerykańskiej listy przebojów.
