Missy Elliott to w świecie muzyki w USA postać wyjątkowa. Mimo odniesienia wielkiego sukcesu komercyjnego czarnoskóra artystka pozostaje tą samą nieśmiałą dziewczyną z Portsmouth w stanie Virginia, ofiarą przemocy w rodzinie (ojciec Missy znęcał się nad jej matką). Missy nigdy nie unikała rozmów na temat swoich bolesnych wspomnień. Dwa lata po debiucie na rynek trafiła płyta "Da Real World" z dwoma wielkimi przebojami - "She's A Bitch" i "Hot Boyz". Rok 2002 to kolejna płyta, która powstała we współpracy Missy z Timbalandem. Album "Under Construction" miał być próbą Missy znalezienia środka na zaradzenie kryzysowi hip-hopu, który - jej zdaniem - zapanował. Sądząc po wynikach sprzedaży (12 mln na całym świecie) udało się jej to całkiem nieźle…
Kolejnym albumem w dorobku Missy Elliott jest "This Is Not A Test" (2003). Wśród gości, jacy pojawiają się na nim, znajdziemy takie gwiazdy, jak: Jay-Z, Monica, Fabolous, Elephant Man i The Clark Sisters. Producentami zostali Craig Brockman, Nisan Stewart, Soul Diggaz i, rzecz jasna, sama Missy oraz Timbaland.
"Jestem wdzięczna za każde wyróżnienie, które otrzymałam. To jest jak sen. Jednak najbardziej komfortowo czuję się w studiu. Zdałam sobie sprawę z tego, że nie należy martwić się o to, co było w ubiegłym roku. Powiedziałam do Timbalanda: "Bierzmy się do roboty". Czułam się bardzo dobrze podczas nagrywania tej płyty. W studiu odnajduję mój spokój".
Missy Elliott ma na koncie kilkanaście nagród. Między innymi dwa razy prestiżowy magazyn "Rolling Stone" wybierał ją hiphopową wokalistką roku. Wśród gwiazd, które zaufały jej zdolnościom producenckim znajdziemy między innymi Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Christinę Aguilerę, Justina Timberlake'a, Destiny's Child. Rok 2005 przynosi kolejną płytę Melissy, zatytułowaną "The Cookbook". Tym razem zaproszenie artystki do studia przyjęli między innymi Ciara, Slick Rick, Mary J. Blige. Na krążku znalazła się między innymi kompozycja "On And On" wyprodukowana przez The Neptunes.
