Earth, Wind & Fire

Początki tej niezwykle barwnej, pełnej wyobraźni grupy sięgają lat 60-tych i chicagowskich kręgów czarnej muzyki. Perkusista Maurice White (ur. 19.12.1941 r. w Memphis w stanie Tennessee, USA) grał na sesjach z takimi artystami, jak Etta James, Fontella Bass i Billy Stewart, po czym w 1965 r. dołączył do Ramsey Lewis Trio. Cztery lata później opuścił jednak szeregi tej formacji, by założyć The Salty Peppers — grupę, która przygotowała grunt dla wczesnej wersji Earth, Wind And Fire.

W składzie tej nowej formacji znaleźli się: Verdine White (ur. 25.07.1951 r. w Chicago w stanie Illinois, USA; bas), Michael Beale (gitara), Wade Flemons (śpiew, instr. klawiszowe), Sherry Scott (śpiew), Alex Thomas (puzon), Chet Washington (saksofon tenorowy), Don Whitehead (instr. klawiszowe) i Yackov Ben Israel (właśc. Phillard Williams; instr. perkusyjne). W swojej twórczości grupa prezentowała elementy jazzu, rhythm'n'bluesa oraz funka, nie gardząc także wpływami muzyki latynoskiej. Debiutancki album, Earth, Wind And Fire, nagrany przy producenckiej współpracy Joego Wisserta przez 13 tygodni utrzymywał się na amerykańskiej liście przebojów.

Jednak w 1972 r., tuż po nagraniu drugiego longplaya — The Need Of Love, Maurice White rozwiązał zespół, by powołać do życia drugą edycję Earth, Wind And Fire. Do współpracy - oprócz swego brata, Verdine'a - zaprosił Philipa Baileya (ur. 8.05.1951 r. w Denver w stanie Kolorado, USA; śpiew, instr. perkusyjne), który pracował wcześniej jako kierownik muzyczny grupy gospel Stovall Sisters, Larry'ego Dunna (właśc. Lawrence Dunhill, ur. 19.06.1953 r. w Denver w stanie Kolorado; fortepian, organy, klarnet), Jessikę Cleaves (ur. 10.12.1948 r.; śpiew, eks-Friends Of Distinction), Rolanda Bautistę (gitara), Ronniego Lawsa (ur. 3.10.1950 r. w Houston w Teksasie, USA; saksofon tenorowy, flet) i Ralpha Johnsona (ur. 4.07.1951 r. w Los Angeles w Kalifornii; perkusja, instr. perkusyjne).

"Nowa" formacja podpisała kontrakt ze spółką menedżerską Cavallo & Ruffalo, która zapewniła im udział w trasie Johna Sebastiana w roli tzw. supportu. Ich występ w nowojorskim Rockefeller Center obejrzał szef wytwórni CBS/Columbia Records i wkrótce podpisał z nimi kontrakt nagraniowy. Zarejestrowany w Sunset Sound Studios w Hollywood pierwszy album dla nowej wytwórni, Last Days And Time wszedł do Top 100 amerykańskiej listy przebojów. Liderowi grupy udało się utrzymać nastrój dokonań pierwszego składu, od czasu do czasu zaprawiając go prawdziwym "ogniem". Późną wiosną 1973 r. na rynku ukazał się kolejny udany longplay Head To The Sky. Tuż po jego nagraniu, EW & F opuścili Bautista i Laws, zastąpieni odpowiednio przez Ala McKaya (ur. 2.02.1948 r. w Los Angeles, eks-Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band) i Andrew Woolfolka (ur. 11.10.1950 r. w Denver, występował w grupie Friends & Love z Baileyem i Dunnem). Dodatkowo przyjęto Johnny'ego Grahama (ur. 3.08.1951 r. w Louisville w stanie Kentucky; gitara).

W tym składzie zarejestrowano album Open Our Eyes. W trakcie sesji kolegów opuścił Cleaves. Płyta ukazała się na rynku w marcu 1974 r. osiągając 15. miejsce na amerykańskich listach bestsellerów. Po nagraniu kolejnego albumu That's The Way Of The World, grupa wystąpiła w filmie "Shining Star". Tytułowy temat z tego obrazu przyniósł zespołowi ogromny sukces, wchodząc na pierwsze miejsce zarówno rhythm'n' bluesowej, jak i popowej listy przebojów.

Eklektyczna mieszanka soulu i jazzu od tej pory zaczęła pulsować rytmem, a następne utwory grupy coraz bardziej zapadały w pamięć fanów. W tym czasie formację zasilił Fred White (ur. 13.01.1955 r. w Chicago; perkusja). Swoją kolekcję przebojowych singli Earth, Wind And Fire poszerzyli w następnych latach o takie hity, jak "Fantasy", "September", "After The Love Has Gone" i "Boogie Wonderland", nagrany we współpracy z grupą The Emotions. Wielkim przebojem stała się także jazzowa wersja utworu Lennona i McCartneya "Got To Get You Into My Life" nagrana w 1978 r. na potrzeby filmu "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

Przez cały czas skład Earth, Wind And Fire ulegał ciągłym zmianom. Philip Bailey i Ronnie Laws postanowili rozpocząć karierę solową (Bailey nawiązał współpracę z Philem Collinsem, nagrywając w duecie przebój "Easy Lover" zamieszczony na albumie Chinese Wall), a przez formację przewijała się nieustanna procesja nowych saksofonistów, gitarzystów i perkusistów. Zainteresowanie White'a starożytnym Egiptem i mistycyzmem znacznie wzbogaciło zwłaszcza wizualną stronę formacji. Jednak po nagraniu 11 "złotych płyt", w 1983 r. Earth, Wind And Fire ponieśli pierwszą komercyjną porażkę, kiedy to ich longplay Electric Universe nie wywarł większego wrażenia ani na krytykach, ani na publiczności.

Niepowodzenie to stało się przyczną czteroletniej przerwy w działalności grupy. W 1987 r. Earth, Wind And Fire w nowym składzie — Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Andrew Woolfolk i Sheldon Reynolds (były gitarzysta The Commodores) — powrócili albumem Touch The World, promowanym na 9-miesięcznym tournee. Na pochodzącym z 1990 r. albumie Heritage gościnnie wystąpił rapper MC Hammer i Sly Stone, a wydany w październiku 1993 r. longplay Millennium udowodnił, że muzycy Earth, Wind And Fire mają jeszcze sporo do zaproponowania swoim wielbicielom.
