Melissa Etheridge

Sukces Etheridge rozpoczął się w Kansas, gdzie w wieku 10 lat zaczęła pisać piosenki na gitarę i grać na pianinie i gitarze w miejscowych zespołach.

Gdy miała lat 18 wstąpiła do Berklee College of Music w Bostonie, jednocześnie regularnie grając w miejscowych kawiarniach i dopracowując swój styl. Następnie, podobnie jak wielu innych, w poszukiwaniu muzycznego sukcesu przeniosła się do Los Angeles. Podczas jednego z występów została zauważona przez założyciela Island Records Chrisaa Blackwella, którego oczarowała na tyle, że natychmiast zaprosił ją do współpracy.

Jeszcze przed swym debiutem napisała muzykę czterech piosenek do filmu Weeds. Jej debiut, album Melissa Etheridge, w 1988 roku pozostawał w rankingach przez 65 tygodni, przebijając się na 22 miejsce.

Sukces powtórzyła w 1989 roku albumem Brave and Crazy pozostając w rankingach przez ponad rok. Zdobyła trzy nominacje do Grammy i kanadyjską prestiżową nagrodę Juno Award za Najlepszą Międzynarodową Piosenkarkę Roku.
Za singiel "Ain't It Heavy", ze swego trzeciego albumu Never Enough dostała pierwszą Grammy w kategorii za najlepszy kobiecy, rockowy występ.

Angażuje się politycznie - regularnie bierze udział w uroczystościach włącznie z występem w prezydenckiej kampanii w 1992 roku. W 1993 roku znalazła się wśród wielu wykonawców, którzy wystąpili na ceremonii inauguracyjnej Billa Clintona.

Zaangażowana w działalność na rzecz kobiet. W 1996 roku otrzymała nagrodę dla najlepszego twórcy piosenek roku. Należy do najpopularniejszych wykonawczyń lat 90tych.
