Carroll urodził się w Atlantic City w stanie New Jersey. Sam nauczył się grać na pianinie i zaczął grać w kinach jeszcze przed ukończeniem szkoły podstawowej. Po ukończeniu szkoły średniej przeniósł się do Pittsburgha, a następnie do Nowego Jorku, gdzie pracował jako aranżer w Tin Pan Alley, a wieczorami występował w Garden Café i towarzyszył różnym wodewilom.
