Urodziła się 21 lipca 1922r w Oklahomie, trafiła jako dziecko wraz z rodziną do Dallas ,debiutując jeszcze jako uczennica w miejscowym radio.Krótko występuje z orkiestrą Glenna Millera, następnie z zespołami Boba Crosby'ego i Charlie Barneta.Pierwsze swoje nagrania realizuje z tym ostatnim zespołem przed swoim solowym kontraktem z wytwórnią Capitol.
Pierwsze sukcesy na listach przebojów przychodzą w 1948 roku wraz z piosenką "You Were Only Foolin' (While I Was Falling in Love)" .Póżniejsze "Hoop-Dee-Doo", "Oh, Babe!" i "I'll Never Be Free",są jej afirmacją wrodzonych zdolności do repertuaru tradycyjnego country i folka.
W 1952 roku wydaje swój największy hit-"Wheel of Fortune",jedną z
wizytówek brzmienia pop w latach 50-tych.Po kilku latach regularnej
obecności na listach przebojów udaje się jej znów osiągnąć jej
wierchołek,tym razem w W.Brytanii singlem "Comes A-Long A-Love".W 1955r zmienia wytwórnię na RCA ,która przynosi jej hit #1 w USA wspomnianym wcześniej "Rock and Roll Waltz".Jej ostatnim hitem w Top 10 Billboard była piosenka z 1957 roku "My Heart Reminds Me" .
W latach 60-tych piosenkarka bardziej koncentruje się na występach na żywo [Las Vegas] niż pracy studyjnej. Jeszcze w latach 90-tych wraz z towarzyszącymi jej Helen O'Connell i Margaret Whiting odbywa wspomnieniowe turnee.
