W czasach szkolnych spotykał się z Carol Klein (znaną później jako Carole King). Przez krótki okres grał w zespole The Tokens, potem otrzymał stypendium nowojorskiej Juilliard School Of Music. W 1958 r. pianista rozpoczął naukę w Don Kirshner's Brill Building School, kształcącej kompozytorów i autorów piosenek.
Pierwszy sukces przyniosła Sedace kompozycja "Stupid Cupid", która była wielkim światowym hitem Connie Francis. Rok później artysta podpisał kontrakt nagraniowy z RCA i opublikował niezbyt udany singel "The Diary". Następny duży przebój "I Go Ape" ugruntował jego wysoką pozycję. Kolejny hit "Oh, Carol",
podbił światowe listy przebojów. Artysta ubolewał w nim nad rozstaniem
ze swoją dziewczyną, Carole King odpowiedziała mu miłym "0h, Neil".
W pierwszej połowie lat 60. Sedaka nagrał wiele pamiętnych przebojów, wśród nich m.in. "Stairway To Heaven", "Calendar Girl", "Little Devil", "King Of Clowns", "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" czy "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do".
Wszystkie one były lirycznym podsumowaniem osobistych przeżyć artysty,
mówiły o miłości, rozstaniu, rozczarowaniu, opisywały beztroskie życie
nastolatków. Z czasem piosenki Sedaki straciły na aktualności, wydały
się zbyt infantylne, nie odpowiadały duchowi nadchodzących czasów i, co
było nieuniknione, zaczęły odchodzić w zapomnienie.
Sedaka zrezygnował z kariery gwiazdy pop, ale przez następne 10 lat
nadal komponował. Powstały wtedy m.in. takie przeboje, jak: "Venus In Blue Jeans" (wykonywany przez Jimmy'ego Clantona i Marka Wyntera),"Working On A Groovy Thing" (z repertuaru Fifth Dimension), "Puppet Man" (przebój Toma Jonesa) i "Is This The Way To Amarillo?" (Tony'ego Christie).
W 1972 roku Sedaka powrócił na scenę albumem Emergence i przeniósł się do Wielkiej Brytanii. W 1973 r. znów zagościł na brytyjskich listach przebojów z piosenką "That's When The Music Takes Me" pochodzącą z płyty Solitaire. Kolejny album The Tra - La Days Are Over (z 1973 r.) został oceniony wysoko, a zawierał m.in. utwór dedykowany Howardowi Greenfieldowi "Our Last Song Together".
Longplay Laughter In The Rain pomógł Sedace wzmocnić swoyą
pozycję w kraju rodzinnym. W 1975 r. utwór tytułowy dotarł do
pierwszego miejsca listy bestsellerów w USA. W tym samym roku kompozycja
Sedaki "Love Will Keep Us Together" w wykonaniu duetu Captain And Tennille wspięła się na szczyty amerykańskich notowań, podobny sukces odniosła piosenka "Bad Blood". Rok zakończył się publikacją nowej wersji "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do", w zupełnie odmiennej aranżacji, która zdobyła także wielką popularność.
Ostatnim dużym przebojem Sedaki był wykonywany razem z córką Darą utwór "Should've Never Let You Go" (z 1980 r.). Sedaka regularnie koncertuje, śpiewając swoje hity z okresu dwóch dziesięcioleci.
