Levi Stubbs (właśc. Levi Stubbles, ur. 6.06.1936 r. w Detroit w stanie Michigan, USA),
Renaldo "Obie" Benson (ur. 1937 r. w Detroit),
Lawrence Payton (ur. 1938 r. w Detroit) i
Abdul "Duke" Fakir (ur. 26.12.1935 r. w Detroit).
Pod nazwą The Four Aims kontynuowali występy w miejscowych nocnych lokalach, wykonując jazzowe i popularne standardy.
W 1956 r., chcąc uniknąć skojarzeń z popularną grupą wokalną The Ames Brothers. zmienili nazwę na The Four Tops. Testowy singel nagrany dla lansującej muzykę rhythm'n'hluesowa wytwórni Chess nie zyskał uznania, podobnie jak kolejne dla Red Top. Columbii i Riverside w latach 195S - 1962.
W 1963 r. The Four Tops podpisali kontrakt z Workshop, promującą jazz filią sławnej wytwórni Tamla Motown. Jej szef Berry Gordy, zasugerował rezygnację z planowanego na 1964 r. debiutanckiego albumu Breaking Through i współpracę z firmowym, kompozytorsko-producenckim triem Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Pierwsze nagranie - ..Baby I Need Your Loving" - prezentujące
wokalne możliwości grupy, a zwłaszcza basowy soul Leviego Stubbsa,
znalazło się w 1964 r. w amerykańskiej Top 20.
W rok później kolejna kompozycja braci Hollandów i Doziera "I Can't Help Myself"
- trafiła na szczyt amerykańskich list, czyniąc z The Four Tops
najbardziej obiecującą gwiazdę wytwórni Motown.Współpraca ze spółką
trwała do 1967 r., a jej szczytowym osiągnięciem było "Reach Out I' ll Be There"
- światowy przebój The Four Tops z początku 1966 r. kwintesencja
typowego dla Motown połączenia symfonicznych aranżacji z
rhythm'n'bluesową, pełną seksu wokalizą.
Producent Phil Spector określił ich mianem "murzyńskiego Boba Dylana".
Również inne przeboje: "It's The Same Old Song", "Bernadette", choć mniej ambitne uchodzą do dziś za klasykę brzmienia Motown.
W 1967 r. The Four Tops rozszerzyli repertuar o soulowe interpretacje popularnych przebojów "Walk Away Renee" grupy Left Banke i "If I Were A Carpenter" Tima Hardina.
Odejście spółki autorskiej Holland-Dozier-Holland z Motown spowodowało
regres w działalności zespołu. Powrót do łask słuchaczy nastąpił dopiero
w 1970 r. nagraniami starego przeboju Tommy'ego Edwardsa "It's All In The Game" i poruszającej tematykę społeczną ballady "Still Water (Love)".
W tym samym roku The Four Tops nagrali pierwszy z trzech wykonywanych wspólnie z The Supremes albumów - The Magnificent 7.
W 1971 r. przypomnieli kolejny stary przebój - "MacArthur Park" Richarda Harrisa, a kompozycja Renaldo Bensona "What's Going On" odniosła singlowy sukces w wykonaniu Marvina Gaye'a. Mimo to, po współpracy z The Moody Blues w realizacji piosenki "A Simple Game", The Four Tops postanowili w 1972 r. opuścić wytwórnię Motown, kiedy jej centrum przeniesiono z Detroit do Kalifornii.
Nagrania dla nowej wytwórni Dunhill odniosły natychmiastowy
sukces dzięki nawiązującemu do lat sześćdziesiątych brzmieniu i idiomowi
bliskiemu upodobaniom czarnej publiczności, jak w "Are You Man Enough" z popularnego filmu "Shaft In Africa".
W drugiej połowie lat siedemdziesiątych pozbawione dynamizmu utwory The
Four Tops rzadko gościły na listach przebojów, mimo częstych występów i
tras koncertowych ze starym repertuarem. Po dwóch latach bezczynności
kwartet przypomniał się słuchaczom pod koniec lat siedemdziesiątych
nagranym dla Casablanca Records utworem "When She Was My Girl",
który trafił na pierwsze miejsce list przebojów soulowych. Również
kolejne nagrania, nawiązujące do starego brzmienia, spotkały się z
uznaniem w Wielkiej Brytanii i USA.
W 1983 r. w telewizyjnym programie z okazji dwudziestopięciolecia
wytwórni Motown The Four Tops stoczyli fascynujący pojedynek na stare
przeboje z grupą The Temptations. Dla dawnej firmy nagrali album pod wymownym tytułem Back Where I Belong, wypełniony na jednej stronie kompozycjami Hollandów i Doziera.
Rynkowe niepowodzenie płyty w połączeniu ze sporami o muzyczny kierunek,
w jakim powinni zmierzać, doprowadziły do kolejnego zerwania kontraktu z
Motown i przejścia do wytwórni Arista.
Dwa pierwsze nagrane tam single: "Indestructible" i "Loco In Acapulco" (drugi ze ścieżki dźwiękowej z filmu "Buster") odniosły w 1988 r. błyskawiczny sukces.
The Four Tops, śpiewający od powstania w niezmienionym składzie, dzięki
profesjonalnym tanecznym i wokalnym umiejętnościom pozostają od połowy
lat sześćdziesiątych do dziś scenicznymi ulubieńcami zwłaszcza w Anglii i
na kontynencie europejskim, gdzie zawsze przyjmowano ich z większą, niż
w ojczyźnie, estymą.
