swoje prawdziwe powołanie co zaowocowało takimi hitami jak,"Nine Pound Steel," "(You Keep Me) Hangin' On," i #1 na listach rhythm'n'bluesowych "The Chokin' Kind" autorstwa Harlana Howarda.od 1970r współpracuje w Spring Records z duetem producentów, czarodziejów piosenki Kenny Gamble i Leonem Huffem ,dzięki którym odnosi kolejne sukcesy .Dowodem na to jest hit "Drowning in the Sea of Love" nagrany rok póżniej.
Próbuje się znależć się w erze disco w 1975r dwoma udanymi utworami "Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor)" i "Music in My Bones".Póżniej wycofuje się z muzycznego rynku poświęcając się kościołowi.
